Hey guys, just wanted to share a personal experience with you, that may save you some money and headaches through the experience I had. They say the lessons that stick with you are the ones that hurt, and being shorted out $120 as a college student, before first day of classes start, well hurts.

To preface this post, I will simplify my points as addressed in the thread title, save the shipping boxes your Balls came in, and be wary of the UPS store.

The College Boy's Story:

Firstly, I was having a huge personal struggle with the RW JP6 I have. It was great for the music I was playing up until now. (The drawback of being a gun for hire and teacher is you don't oftentimes play/teach the music you personally enjoy, it's what the customer wants!) So I called up Pete and inquired about trading in my JP for something else. We worked something out, had a plan, and made arrangements.

So everything went fine, until I went to e-mail Pete the tracking number letting him know I shipped it out(via the UPS Store no less), and I dropped the price it took to ship the guitar to him: $169.80

He basically told me I was robbed. Mugged, you could say, by telling me he ships via UPS to me around $50. There's a $120 discrepancy somewhere. After talking to Pete and doing a little research, I come by this little tidbit:

MBE is a UPS® company. The UPS Store® locations are independently owned and operated by franchisees of Mail Boxes Etc., Inc. in the USA and by its international master licensees and their franchisees outside of the USA. Services and hours of operation may vary by location.

UPS Stores are not directly owned nor operated by UPS! They take your package, then ship it out, with an additional *handling and convenience fee* on the side! Since I didn't have a box for my EBMM OHSC, they told me a custom box would have to be crafted, and an additional handling charge would be included. My total was $170. Basically $120 for shipping, $50 for a box. I could have avoided $50 by saving my old box, or having a box ready (though its hard to find one in the OHSC dimensions)

UPS does have options online where a driver can come by and pick up a package at your place, and you print the labels yourself. Much, much cheaper. This method, in conjunction with saving my old box would have only cost around $50! It requires a bit more digging online, and a bit more research, but it's so worth it. My total was $170 for regular, standard ground service(4-5 business days) and the Overnight Air Shipping cost for Pete to send me my other guitar to me was around $160. Both via UPS, except mine via the UPS Store. There's something terribly bizarre about that.

Anyways, lesson learned, it builds character, etc. etc.

1. Save the boxes your balls came in, could save you 50 bucks down the line if you need to ship it for whatever reason.

2. Try UPS directly, FedEX or something else.

Anyways, that's my tale. And it's also a way for me to sneak in the fact I'm getting a new Ball.

the UPS stores and any pack and ship place is going to gouge you big time. best bet is to get your own boxes from a local music store, pack it yourself and ship it thru a friends UPS account at work. You'll pay closer to $40-$50. They add so many fees for packing and charge yo for the box, packing materials etc.

My general idea for packing is when the box is sealed, pick the box up and shake it, if anything moves inside, you need more padding/packing.

I'm thinking maybe you should have put up a for sale/trade ad for local only to see if anyone would bite on it or had an interesting trade. But I'm glad you found what you wanted.

Wanted to deal with Pete. :D

The only downside to this is Dubaldo Music is literally on the exact opposite side of the country.

S'all good, supporting your dealer.

Steve,

I had a similar experience with an amp. I bought an Atomic off of ebay a couple of months ago. The amp was not working properly and after a couple of tests we came to the conclusion that returning it would be the best thing.

I still had the box and everything it came with. When I went to UPS, they said it would cost around $200 to ship it back. I started freaking out because I did not want to pay that much for something that does not even work in the first place.

I called the seller and he was surprised as well. He was kind enough to give me his UPS account and details. Since I used his account, he only paid $25 which is way better than $200.

Not your JP :(

I found that same issue when shipping a very small bubble-envelope (like the one I sent your A/B/Y box in) with just a single cable in it. I was charged $15 for something I sold on eBay for $20 with free shipping...not cool.

After that, I started using the UPS website. Do yourself a favor for next time and go sign up for My UPS and get a UPS Account. They don't charge you anything unless you ship a package, and the rates are in line with what Pete told you.

Steve,

That's good information. Don't take this the wrong way, but the more interesting aspect of this story is your trade :D:D What are you getting in exchange for the JP6????? Are you the reason that AL BFR is no longer on Pete's site?

I use old cardboard and cut them to shape and basically build up a box with a tons of packing tape. Then have UPS pick it up, or use the Post Office.

Try to find the UPS Customer Counter, it's usually worth the drive to find it and ship from there. During my big sell-off this summer I went to the customer counter each time and shipped out 3 guitars UPS ground for anywhere from $27 to $38 including the appropriate insurance (that was $1,000 insurance on the $27 shipment and $1,900 insurance on the $38 shipment). None of these went fully cross-country (two to Texas and one to Connecticut) and I had the original boxes for all 3 guitars so that helped.

The Customer Counter is usually at their loading location (often near your airport) in some industrial park, but it is staffed by UPS employees and your shipment goes straight to the first truck to its destination instead of having to be trucked from the UPS Store to loading location, unloaded then reloaded to the first truck to the destination.

However, even if you have the original box the UPS Store will rip you off as I sent a guitar I tried out back to a dealer in CA back in January from the closest UPS Store location and they charged me almost $70 for a shipment insured for $1,600.

EDIT: They say the memory is the first thing to go - the guitar I shipped back to CA for $70 was valued at $1,300, not $1,600.

Go to any guitar store.

When I first was considering selling my sub 1, I went to Daddy's locally with my EBMM hard shell case and asked if they had any boxes hanging around that would fit. They gave me a box that fit perfectly. I've saved that one plus the EBMM one that my Axis came in.....just in case.

When I had a potential buyer, I brought the guitar....in the EBMM case....in the box as if it were ready to go to a UPS store and had them give me a price. I then took it home knowing what the shipping price was.

Exactly what I do when i do not have an EBMM box or the box I have is oversized, but no post office shipping for me!!

Yep any good music store will give you a box, my GC has no problem helping with a free box.

Now Steve, first never throw away the box, no matter what it is, but especially music stuff, never know when you might wnt to trade, sell or change, I think I know quite a bit about this subject:D:p

Next not sure how UPS stores work in Cali but that is what I use exclusively to ship from, never had an issue like yours, the only ripoff ever at a UPS store was buying a box way overpriced which is why no throwing away and if i dont have one I go to GC and get the freebie, that was a lesson learned.

When i ship I go to the UPS website input the data and get the quote off UPS, I then go to the UPS store to ship it, if they say it is more than what i was quoted on UPS website I tell them and they honor the price from UPS.

So yes you got screwed, but remember distance and insurance can skew a shipping price.

Good story, thanks for the warning.

My company mailed something to people UPS a few weeks ago... that's right, address to executives at UPS... and we had mailed it from a "UPS Store" which obviously wasn't really, it was actually a Mailboxes Etc. So we didn't know this, they didn't tell us, and they actually shipped it via FedEx!

Now can you imagine working at UPS and receiving official documents through FedEx?

Anyway, you're right... Everyone do their research!!!

that sucks.

i always go to my local guitar shop to get a box - they're always more than happy to give me a few.

also - i know a lot of people will grab boxes from bicycle stores and make em fit a guitar case

MBE is totally bad news. NEVER send stuff through there. I always keep at least two boxes in the house. I live really close to the Gibson showroom, so I just get boxes from them. I just tell them I have to ship an LP and they gladly contribute. :)

I Evilbay'd a bass last year and shipped via the local UPS distribution warehouse (w/ walkup storefront). Total cost from CA to TX was $42. They even found an extra box at no charge and packed/taped it up for me! Great customer service.

Yes, the UPS Stores are privately owned and a TOTAL rip off. Take the extra time to find your local UPS warehouse and drive there.

BTW, my Ball's box is under the bed, just in case. :)

They are only a rip off if you use their materials. If you pack it up yourself, the shipping charges will be standard.
