Went and saw Luke at the Baked Potato.
Great show. Fantastic playing plus hilarious commentary from Luke.

He opened the show by saying, "We're the White Stripes and all of you have been ripped off!"
:D

Played several cuts from the los lob dvd as well as a killer rendition of Jeff beck's LED BOOTS that had him and the keys trading off ferocious licks.

I ran into him about 40 minutes before the show towards the back and said hello.
Showed him a pic of my Vin Sun Piezo Luke which got a nice smile outta him. We talked about the EB Open House.

They were also recording the show for a live cd. Tons of eqip. Luke played mostly his black sparkle and a couple of rad reds. one with natty, one with black. Also had pole pieces showing on neck pick up on one.

I'm jealous......hoping that the European El Grupo tour will visit the UK, but I have a horrible feeling it won't. I'll cross my fingers and see. Luke is one of the few guitarists I admire that I haven't seen live yet.

Also had pole pieces showing on neck pick up on one.

I believe that's a Fernandes Sustainer.

also, it struck me how totally easy going Luke was right before this gig. Obviously the guy is an old pro, but he was greeting everyone and made the rounds before a show that was being RECORDED.

conducted an interview outside the club with the other band members like 20 minutes before they went on.

Also, a few songs in when Luke was tuning up or changing guitars, some woman yells out "AFRICA!"

Luke says, Boy are you at the wrong gig (or something to that effect). Then said that had never happened to him before playing the Baked Potato. Where he's always been his happy fusion /rocking self.

Umm.... Thats odd. cause it HAS happened to him before..... :D 3 times that I have seen him at the Baked Potato...... On person yelled out "Jake To The Bone" to which
Luke replied.... "Wrong Band!!" at a different gig another guy yelled out "Rosanna!!" to which Luke Replied "Get that guy the F**K outta here!!" and at a Third gig with the Doves of Fire someone yelled out "99!!" to which Luke replied " I would rather get fisted in my ass than play that song again!!" at which point Jeff Babko started the Piano Intro to 99 and Luke Bent himself over his Rack with his ass up in the air.....
Ahhhh memories of Luke Gigs....
:) :D

:D

Maybe it happens EVERY time he plays there and he was being totally sarcastic.

He did immediately launch into a lounge rendition of HOLD THE LINE that sounded a bit SAMMY DAVIS JR like. Had the crowd cracking up. Then he says he's got lounge versions of all the tunes in order to keep himself interested playing the same f'in songs for 30 years!

Man, I'm jealous as hell! Sounds like a great gig. (Led Boots is one of my fave Jeff Beck tunes.)

Another classic Luke moment

(I hope I get this right)

After the white stripes comment luke mentioned that bob bradshaw was in the house...but looking around couldn't find where Bob was, so luke says, "He likes to rub one out before the show."

Dude was killing before playing a note!

Note: I think it was bob he was talking about, coulda been a band member.

Classic Luke Moment:
The infamous "Carlos Vega Memorial Concert" 2 years ago I believe.. Luke had "had a few" and someone mentioned a "12 Step" program at which point Luke Replied: "you mean those 12 steps I fell down last night?!" after which he began listing off the 12 "Dirty Sexual Acts" steps. All the while David Garfield, Completely unamused, kept interjecting... "Steve... STEVE....STEVE!!!" I think I was the only person laughing!!
But then Luke is absolutely hilarious to me!

Standing in bar doug. I asked the bartender if he knew you but he said he didn't. There was a nice woman who got up during the show to go to the bathroom and let me have her seat.

When she got back, I thanked her but asked her to please time her next bathroom run during a guitar solo.

wasn't too bad actually. Had a perfect view of Luke, bass and keys...right up until Luke started playing...then 2 guys moved up in my way, then a bunch more followed them and I was screwed of my Luke view.
Unobstructed view of bass and keys.

The keyboard player incidentally, was classically trained. Luke made mention of that fact and dude went into a Chopin etude that was sped up but sounded so cool at a rock/fusion show

Steve Weingart is killer, I've seen him with Tony MacAlpine & Virgil Donati many times. (That Chopin etude was on a Tony solo album...Tony is a classically trained pianist too...)

I'm going to see CAB at the Spud later this month...MacAlpine Weingart & Simon Phillips on drums. Big ass cheesy potatoes rule. :p

Mike Miller is playing there tonight!

I'll be back there. hadn't been since the early '80's. Great vibe in that place.

Have to skip the baked potatoes though (and pizza and sugar and alcohol)...so says my cardiologist :(

On the bright side, I definitely feel better these last few months.
Chest pains are a wake up call...so is that flick SUPER SIZE ME.
