What did I do? I took my lumps and sold the guitar at a huge loss to the ebay buyer. It was not the buyer's fault that it didn't go higher, and I would be breaking my word not to sell to him.

No, I agree. It shouldn't be allowed to happen. That's why they have a reserve price available. If the guy was concerned about getting a certain amount of money for it he should've set a reserve.brett8388 said:"You can't make him sell you the guitar, neither can eBay"
I know, but I can ruin the 80+ and 100% positive feedback he has accumulated over the years with a nice, big, fat "Fraudulent seller - would not sell the item I won!" feedback. Plus, karma is a bitch - this kind of thing comes back to haunt.
A year ago, I listed a pretty valuable guitar on ebay. On the last day, the bidding was at $800 (I expected $2000), but I had many watchers so I let the auction ride instead of pulling it for a local offer. One problem - it expired the night of the Superbowl, and no one bid but some dude from England - $810. I was going to lose $1200 on the sale.

I wish this dude would do the same, but as we all know, some people's word doesn't mean squat.
