Scratch/Paint Chip Stingray Body Repair

hello,

well unfortunatly, I managed to knock my Music Man Stingray over and chip a chunk of the black finish, about half an inch in diameter. The wood is visible but doesnt look like it was scratched or dented. Just looking for some helpfull information as to how to go about touching up this mishap. The finish seems pretty solid, but Id like to prevent any more of the paint chipping away. Any help is much appreciatted!

you mean no body has any info on what kind of paint to use to touch up big scratches? or maybe it doesnt matter what kind of paint I use?

Most people would just leave it.

You could touch it up with some car paint.

Nail polish is what many people use. You're lucky that black is an easy color to match.

Did that to my sterling about 2 weeks after I bought it, covered it with nail polish that matched pretty well, wished I had left it alone.

Did that to my bongo about 2 weeks after I bought it, didn't cover it with nail polish, left the wood showing - I'm happy. It gives the bass character.

Agreed, neglect is one thing, but when a bass has character it just looks good. I find that's another thing MM's excell at. They look good even when they're a bit beaten up, only then, they're even badder(that's right, I went there) Mofo's .



Keep the character. If not though, nail polish seems to do the trick.

i would have left it, but this is a HUGE ding, about an inch in diameter, basicly a huge circular chunk. I was more worried of the paint continuing to flake off, which would have become a really serious problem. I was just looking for a heavy duty paint that should mend this gouge and not wreck the wood. car touch up paint sounds like a good idea. I wouldnt worry about character, the way I throw this guy around, the headstock already has multiple dings.

However, the page seems to be geared towards players who want their instruments in *mint* condition again. When I banged a chunk out of my headstock I got some car touch-up paint from Shucks. You can find little bottles that have both a brush and pen applicator built in. I chipped off the loose paint flakes, then brushed on five or six thin coats until the touch up was level with the original paint job. A day later, I sanded it with wet 1200 grit sand paper and used a bit of polishing compound to blend it in, and...well, yes, the damage's still pretty obvious up close. But from a distance it ain't so bad.

Note: I don't have any other experience in this, so I'm not recommending you do the same thing. Personally, I think certain guitars have a charm when they get a few dings. Just the Bongo I have looks too modern to exude any charm when it's beat up. It's like how a dinged old VW Bug still looks cool, but a bashed up Beamer...not so good...I dunno, it's your choice.

hey thanks for the link, thats exactly what I needed, I think the glue and paint/wet sanding should help prevent any more paint from flaking off.

It is true that ska doesn't really do it for me anymore, but that was a different time in my life when I made that, and I don't really feel like introducing myself again with a different user name. However, there is no need to insult my user name becuase you changed the size of the hole without saying why. To me it just seemed you wanted to get attention. Apparently it flaked off. You didn't say that. How was I supposed to know?

Colin, There's really not much you can do, It won't keep flaking off unless you pick at it. It's kind of like a Poly Finish which is very durable. Hope this helps. Dave J
