Not sure what's going on. The corners of the frets of my Axis Super Sport have gotten rough. The neck used to be silky smooth but now the it's all raspy. I got some ideas on how to handle this but seeking from advice on how to best address this. I'm guessing that the wood shrunk a bit and fret ends just stuck out enough to make them all scratchy. Never had this happen to a guitar.

Thanks!

:D

Yeah scratchy frets does sound somewhat unsophisticated. Good name for a band. Thanks for the tips, now that I know what to call it I found a bunch reference materials online.

You need humidity. When the neck dries up a bit the wood shrinks, exposing the fret ends. Make sure you keep your guitars in a room with adequate humidity- that's good advice even if you don't have any fret sprout.

If you're concerned, the CS folks can certainly help you out.

It will take a while to swell back up with a humidifier in the case, you could take it to a luthier and he can knock off the fret ends with a file & polish them up, should be around a $25 fix. This way if it does get dry, they won't stick out again.

They do that b/c the necks are unfinished (except for the oil and wax) unlike most brands that have finished neck

Fret sprout has nothing to do with the finish. The wood shrinks, the metal doesn't. Pop goes the fret sprout. Happens on any guitar regardless of finish if it dries out.
Easy fix on a rosewood board, have to be careful with a maple lacquered neck.

Yah, weather in the northeast is raising havoc with my guitars. Bringing a guitar from inside to the trunk of the car with 20 degree outside temps then back inside to practice.....tuning is all over the place for an hour.....

yeah, I live in NY (Long Island). Its 20 degrees for the last few nights. Be careful, you could get finish checking if you don't let your guitar slowly warm up in its case after being in a trunk for even just an hour or two. Prop the case open with its latches if you can so air will circulate thru the 1" case opening for at least 30 minutes before opening it fully....
