Seeking Wisdom - Taking The Plunge

Ok, well a little over a year has gone by since I joined the Forum and believe it or not I still don't own a EBMM guitar. I was going to jump full bore into a JP6, most of you have been there.... right?

After alot of lurkng and exhausting the search feature, I come to you for some sage advice. Bad news, I have narrowed it down to two guitars. Good news, wife says I can get two guitars.

So that said, here is what I am going with. I think I know the differences between them, but if you want to add anything for my benefit let me know. I am mostly concerned with how the guitar ( neck ) will feel and what tones I'll be able to coax out of them - this will be the fun part. Style will be from Blues to Rock to Metal, played thru both Digital Modelers and Tube amps ala Mesa Boogie.

1- BFR - JP6 - KOA
2- Axis - Quilt

Personally, i'd go with an ASS instead of an Axis. Especially for your bluesier stuff. Seems to me a Jp and an Axis = Rock and Rock.

I've had an Axis and I play a bluesy style of rock...I sold the Axis for an ASS fealt it to be a better fit.

Not sure that's what you want to hear....but....

You can't go wrong with the Jp. It's a very versatile guitar and would fit your style of playing, especially the rock/metal aspects.

I agree and I would upgrade that ASS (or Axis if you must have a Floyd) to BFR. Regular Balls are fantastic guitars, but the BFRs are out of this world.

Do you prefer skinny necks (Ibanez wizard type) or fatter necks (fender type)?

I see, so the JP and the Axis would be redundant to an extent. I may consider it to avoid the hassle of dealing with a Floyd, I believe he ASS come with a tremolo bridge or are they all hardtails ( I suppose I could have checked myself ).

I appreciate all your feedback, I've avoided posting because every time I give it some thought or look at a product more I see some other color or whatever that makes me think.

I do however believe the JP will give me a wide variety of tones including the acoustic/electric sounds. The Axis just wants to take me back to when I was a kid.

The super sports do come with a tremolo, its a good one.
The JP has a phenomenal tremolo, best I have used.

I can't answer to axis "I have not tried one yet"
but jp6 Koa is an amazing guitar, you will not regret it.

To me, the first question is the neck size. The JP and Axis are so radically different. Play them both and go from there.

If you don't want a Floyd, definitely don't get an Axis. There are plenty of other great options. ASS, Silo Spec, JP.

Koa is RARE. Pick one up now! You can always get an Axis, anyway!

Go the Koa JP, but for #2 I'd go something to add more versatility.

In terms of being able to switch between the two easier, you might be better off going for a Silo (HSH / 24 Fret), Silo Spec or Luke : all have forearm contour and similar body shapes.

One thing to consider is that the Axis Floyd is not full-floating. The bridge rests on the body of the guitar (pitch-down only) so it's much easier to setup and maintain than a typical full-floating Floyd (say that 10 times fast).

To me, the Axis has a slightly more solid feel than the ASS, and has just a little more "oomph" since the bridge pickup is set closer to the strings. However, I find that I use the single coil modes on my ASS much more than I thought I would (those in-between positions sound so sweet!). So for versatility, I'd suggest an ASS over an Axis since you'll already have the "rock" tones covered in the JP.
