I am having overwhelming GAS for the new SR4 classic and I need your opinions. I'm considering selling my DDII SR4HH SLO to help purchase a new classic. My concern is losing the tonal variation I now have with the active HH for the passive single H. A few years back I would have just bought the classic without worrying about selling anything else, but the realities of today are, well, real. I know many of you have already started playing the classics so I want to know if you feel limited without the additional H. Even those playing a single active H still have available variations.
Thanks for any input.

I have zero input however I was just curious as to which color you were interested in getting for the SR4 classic?

The classics will hang around considering the colour offerings will be changed. In my opinion I'd keep the DDII, if you do sell it and regret it it's gonna be hard to find another one like it. Save for the classic and there might be a colour that appeals to you more in the future.

I would personally keep the DDII if given the choice of the two, but its defiantly a tough one to think about once the GAS has set in as they are both very nice.
(sorry if not a lot of help :p)

They are very tempting.

I don't have any experience on either, but if you like the Dargie II, I'd keep it and save too. There are no indications that the Classics are a limited run yet, with the potential exception of the colours, so you have some time.

uhm.. i bleeb the classics are active as well.. just not with 2 pickups and switching, only the oldskool 2 band eq and jackoutput on the control plate ;)

if i were you id hang on to the dd2. much rarer than the classic series which you probably can get next year too (only in a different color ;))

I'd get the Classic. I'm going to sell my 30th to get one. I don't care so much about the rarity and collectibility, the playability of the neck and sweet 2 eq tone is what does it for me.

Have you played one yet? The finish and radius of the neck, as well as the electronics, may nudge you one way or the other.

I agree 100%. That's exactly what I did and couldn't be happier. I miss the 30th, but not as much as I love having the Classic.

First off the NEW Classics ARE active...2 Band EQ only...IMHO they sound pretty much like an old Stingray is SUPPOSED to sound! I had a single H Dargie...different animal altogether as far as I am concerned. For me at least there is NO contest between the 2. I also had an HH 3 band at the same time I had my Classic and I did not feel limited by the Classic at all. I preferred the Classic over the 3 Band HH by a LONG shot. The HH is a great tool to have but if you want old school StingRay TONE to die for the Classic is definitely the way to go. I don't buy basses based on their collectibility, I buy them strictly based on what they sound and feel like. Personally I would sell everything I had to get a Classic if that is what I needed tone wise. Lucky for me I have my SR5 and I have a Big Al on the way! I REALLY want a Big Al 4 single H just because BP says they are THE single H to have...I also may get a Big Al 5 Single H (maybe...:D) BUT I will definitely get a Classic in Natural just as soon as I can no matter what else I may have or get in the future. There is NO other bass that does what it does as well as it does as far as I know....

Peace,

T

I've gone for coral red as you can see from my sig - it was a hard choice as I like all of the other colours - I toyed with the idea of shell pink, and also powder blue with white pg - a case of having to make a choice really!

One thing is for sure, I don't expect it to have the flexibility of the SR4HH which has such a range of usable tones - I would keep your HH and save for the Classic (or get one on 0% interest if you get that option where you are).

You can also tell from my sig that I clearly do not feel limited by the single H.

Love my Classic; I do miss the contoured body and if weight is an issue for you, my advice is to try it first (or order from someone w/a return policy). Sucks to order/wait several months and get an 11lb bass (@ least 4 me it sucks and they're out there). I played a few and talked to a few dealers, generally in 9.5 - 10.5lb range but can vary more. A local GC has mint green/maple that feels within 8-9lb range - very nice (PM me if interested). BC has a beauty of a coral red (Nice maple neck!) - believe that one is 10lb even. Ebay has a black/rosewood and dealer says it's 9 even - nice!

The Classic neck radius is great and edges feel softer; the neck depth feels slightly deeper (not like a V, jest very slightly a bit meatier).

Tone is GREAT! you will not be disappointed!

If I were you, I would sell the DDII to me for 1/2 of your purchase price (it is now used) and buy a SR4 Classic new for full price:eek:
