I had that same attitude about playing with a pick until I saw Bobby Vega play last week. Now I want to learn to play with a pick.

Randy and I had talked about picking. Then Jack mentioned Bobby picked in one of the SOB threads. So I decided to give it a go. Wish I could of heard and seen what Bobby does with one. :(

And thanks Gav! Gonna be getting some picks from down under. w00t

Man, I'm so sorry that you missed out on Bobby Vega's performance. Especially since you are wanting to play with a pick. Of all the things that happened last weekend, I think I was most blown away with Bobby's performance. He played a bass with more funk than I've ever heard.

I use a pick on only one song, "Brown Eyed Girl" because I like the way it puts the bass out front on that particular tune.

Most any heavy gauge pick will suffice.

Brown Eyed Girl w/ Fingers

Bobbled the first part of first verse when I got into a panic about the drum machine not playing the right pattern! :)

In all seriousness, it's all personal opinion and taste - not advocating one style over the other.

When I first started playing I used a pick exclusively. Starting with a felt pick then quickly moving to a heavy plastic pick. Played that way fro about 7-8 years. I played upstrokes mostly, going to up and down strokes when speed necessitated it.

At some point, I become frustrated by the fact that the right hand picking wasn't keeping up with the left-hand fretting. At the same time I was exposed to a bass player that did stuff in finger-style I could not do with a pick. I did not have the patience to develop my fingerstyle and moved away from the bass altogether for a while.

Steve Harris convinced me that we could get that sharp, cutting tone via finger-style and when I picked-up the bass again some 15-20 years later I decided to start with fingers - haven't looked back.

Just my story... We all have one... :)

Arin, you want to teach me some picking stuff in Dallas? And maybe spare one or two?

The only thing i've been playing with a pick on is that thing with the 6 skinny strings that I have current possesion of.

All I gotta say is this is way cool. Even tho it is a little thing like a pick, the sense of community here is just awesome.

Thanks all!

NorMally I use Tortex 1 mm....I play guitar and bass with a pick. First though, I have to put the picks in hot water when I first get them. They seem to have a powdery substance on them that makes them slippery for me.

However, my HUGE show I did on Oct. 4, I had a pocket full of the Tortex to throw out to the crowd in my best "Rockstar" moments...but I only used one pick. That was the pick Big Poppa gave me at NAMM....has him name on it. Thought I would bring some luck with me and it worked...I did not hit a bad note all night....LOL...

pick up one or 2 of these to try:

most pople actually dont use them for bass... they are for banjo or some jazz like that :) But if your fingers get tired a felt pick will give you a nice fat warm sound.

_____

If I want a standard pick sound. I like these bad boys

yes they are pink :).... They are a really nice thickness, not too soft. I really dont like the tortex picks.. their texture just doesnt do it for me.

On geetar I like to play with a George Dennis Super 1.60 Most bassists prefer the thick picks... unless your in an emo band or something.... It feels sloppy to use something to thin.

I dont have much experience with those felt picks, but the one time I had one the tone was great, but the felt made a complete mess and got all over my bass.
