My 'new' SR arrived..
Setting it up, driving me nuts..

The relief is just right, fretted at first and last, there is about a business card under the 7th, feels right, all the strings sit nicely at 2-2.4mm at the 12.. But not the low E, I've had to crank it up, even at 3mn its rattling, the others are all fine.

Fiddling the relief doesn't do much, just pushes the buzz from 1st to 12 or 1st to 20th.. But as I mentioned, 3mm, still needs to go higher, neck looks straight (though maybe ever so slightly flatter on the low E side)..

Oh, strings are 45-105 d'addarios (as I've used for ever and on every bass I own!)

Nut seems ok, tried two sets of strings.. All I can do is look at the damn thing! Unplayable until I get it to a luthier :(

Does the rattle get amplified?

Yep.. Currently have the E string at 3.8mm at the 12 and it rattles.. The other strings are at 2.2 and do not rattle..

It's not the nut as it doesn't rattle on the open note.

Can only think the neck may have twisted (doesn't look twisted though)..

neck very rarely warp. take it to a professional repairer

Yeah I'm doubting it too.. Looking down the neck it looks perfect.. It looks like the 12th fret may have lifted the tinniest of tiny amounts (and that's having my OCD goggles on)..

For now I've got it playable with the E at 3mm, it's a bit high still, but playable.

I'm stumped with this one!!

if you have a short flat piece of metal of whatever, like a short metal ruler (must be straight/flat) and long enough to go across at least three frets, place it on the twelfth fret where you think it may be high and see if it rocks like a seesaw between the eleventh and thirteenth fret...if it doesn't then your twelfth fret is fine, or it's lower then the two neighboring frets.

A bit of relief will hepl.
No, it's not a relief issue, relief is spot on.

12 fret is ever so slightly high, but i mean ever so slightly.. It's the only thing I can figure is causing problems.. But it's high by the smallest amount..

steve o thank you..Really one of the basic things here is that we cant fix your bass virtually especially without seeing it....also it looks like we made a new bass bad and we dont learn that it is used until deep in the thread....

Hence the 'new', sorry if people misread that, I never implied the bass was bad or made bad.. (By 'new' i was meaning new to me) I've no experience with MM basses (always played fenders), sometimes with other brands there can be little things particular to certain brands (Rics are a good example, they tend to like less relief than what is considered 'standard').

As it is, it's a 2008 that's not been played (bought new from bass central late 2008/2009 then sold on to me this week.. It has zero wear).

Everything has been set to spec, releif is spot on, string heights are all correct.. You understand my complete puzzlement as to why the E is buzzing even at 3+ mm.. Neck is not twisted, there's no humps etc.. Nothing stands out to me as being 'out', that's why I'm asking you experts in the field of MM basses.. Where better?!

Gotta say.. Never played a stingray before.. Whoa.. Punchy as hell!

In Melbourne, prob take it down to the bass center.. Never taken my basses to anyone before though, always done it myself.. Anyone you know of?
send me an email and I'll find out who the MM distributor uses in Melbourne. The Bass Center is one of the biggest MM Bass dealers so they will point you in the right direction anyway. It will be a simple fix and you'll be on your way to stardom in no time ;)

Thanks, have pinged you a mail. That's what's frustrating me.. I know it's going to be something really small and easy to fix, just can't figure it! V frustrating!
