This is another shot in the dark, but it helped me once with a similar problem:

cat a tiny strip off a business card and place it in the E-string slot of the nut. This will lift the E string at the nut and may be just enough to stop the buzz. Naturally it's not a permanent solution, but it may work until you can see your luthier.

Back from the repair guys.. even they are puzzled.. 'thats really strange, I have no idea what is going on there, i've never seen anything like it'

Nothing appears to be out of whack or wrong.. but the E string is buzzing.. Its currently set up:

G 2.0mm
D 2.1mm
A 2.4mm
E 3.5mm+

Maybe time for a fret dress?

Did you make sure you have a good witness point at both ends of the string? The bigger the string, the more critical this is. Make sure the string has a definite, clean angle where it crosses the nut and the bridge. Especially the bridge. Shove the string down until the witness point is not rounded, but sharp. If the string needs to be retuned because it's now flat, the witness point was not good.

give eb customer service a call.. even if its not a new bass

they have the most experience with these basses of anybody out there!
no promises made on their behalf, but id say you should talk to them..

dont let anybody do anything to your bass before you have consulted the original manufacturer! ;)

guys this is going into one of the most experienced setup guy in Melbourne. Lets just sit back and wait

Hopefully getting to him on Friday.. (and not just experience in Melb, probably the most experience in the country, he does good work!)

Its become interesting though.. Out of interest I tried shimming the neck last night.. The strangest thing.. the E string now rattled all the way to the 20th fret.. One fret to go and it rattles.. I think not.

Muting the strings back to the nut and fretting the 20th it rattles..

This is going to be something small and stupid I bet.. like something along the lines of 'I cannot believe I over looked that'

I appreciate everyones help, I have been trying the little things you have suggested, playing around with my stingray has given me a huge appreciation of the engineering and manufacture of these basses, I'd hate to be going through the truss adjustments like this on a bass that requires the removal of the neck!
