Jon,
I just got my JP6 back yesterday, and holy crap! The neck is BEAUTIFUL! I don't think it could possibly play any better. It is sooooo silky and smooth - I didn't think it was bad to begin with, but there's a HUGE difference. Thanks a bunch! My other guitars are going to spend a LOT more time hanging on the wall now...
I have some questions on setup theory. I'll spend some time setting the stage first. When my guitar arrived, the action was VERY low. On the 12th fret, the low E string was only a little over 1/64 off the fret. At the 24th, it was around 2/64ths. There was severe buzzing all over the fretboard - I'm assuming the neck shifted during transport given the distance and weather difference. The buzzing wasn't a problem with the mag pickups, but in order to get a clean sound of out of the piezo, I had to make some adjustments. I'm not telling you this as a negative - just to say that I had to do some readjusting, and it raised some questions.
In my case to remove the buzzing, I had to adjust the truss rod so there was almost no relief - maybe half the thickness of a business card when checked between the 2nd and 12th frets. (Oh...and incidentally, is it normal to hear some creaking every now and then when adjusting the truss rod?? It's a scary sound!) I then had to adjust the individual string height. When all said and done, I now have just over 2/64 at the 5th fret, 4/64 at the 12th and 5/64 at the 24th. Just for kicks, I compared it to my Gibson Les Paul, and it is set at 4/64 from the 1st to the last fret. Did I do something wrong on my JP6?
When set up correctly, how much should the string height vary between say the 5th, 12th and 24th frets? In a perfect setup, would the height be even from the first fret to the last? If so, how would one go about getting it that way? Should I be adding more relief and then lowering the individual string heights? Reducing the relief further? Or is what I have now pretty normal?
Any thoughts on a procedure would be greatly appreciated. I'm finding this very interesting - but frustrating at the same time. I don't know how you do it so quickly. I just spent another 8 hours tweaking....
Thanks,
MikeVt
