So, I'm messing with my new combo amp and I love it. It's clearly quieter when I use the effects loop for my pedals, although I was getting radio signals through my amp tonight. My questions are:

1-what makes an effects loop quieter?
2-is there a way to get rid of interference such a radio signals and such?
3-what brand cable do you guitar recommend between the pedals and effects loop's send and return?
4-lastly, what do you guys use to bundle up several cables together going from the amp to pedalboard and back?

thanks for the help. I appreciate it.

1- well i was mucking around with my g-major2 in the loop of my mark5 and it was the volume of the g-major itself that had an affect on the output level. so maybe the volume on the pedals is lower. but not 100% on this one..

2- cant help sorry, never had it happen.

3- generally any guitar cable should do the trick, ernie ball make cables, ive found dimarzio cables to be good. but planetwaves have a DIY cable so you can make it to your length that you need (this kind of answers Q4) and apparently they are quite good. im going to go this road as i hate having excess cables laying around when it doesnt need to be.

4- like i said before the planetwaves DIY cables are good, or you can simply cable tie them out of the way.. (cheapest solution)

To answer your first question, using the effects loop bypasses the preamp section of the amp. Whatever you plugin then takes on the role of the preamp and the volume(s) of any devices plugged in will control the output volume.

1-Like marduke said, trying mucking around with the levels on your pedals

2-If you get radio signals through your amp, that's normally a grounding issue.

3-I use planet wave cables.

4-Just use some cable ties.

What amp did you get???

Hey marduke, what do you think of the G-Major 2??? does it have power through midi, l have a an original G-Major and it's just a pain in the ass having to run a power cable to my midi controller.

so far i like it, havent really had a chance to sit down and play with it yet (just used the factory presets). im not too sure about the phantom power, i dont think it does... but yeah i know what you mean i dont want a power cable running to the front aswell... neat and tidy is how i like it :)

Hey, is your amp's loop line-level? (like studio effects are) or is it instrument level (like a normal guitar pedal? Some amp effects loop are switchable between instrument and line, but if it's not then it is probably line level. The Eventide factor pedals are switchable between line and instrument levels, but most guitar pedals are not.

Thanks bro, yeah 1 less cable to trip over, one less cable that could malfunction.

i have posted some pickup related things in the pst weeks and now as i am about to actually do the replacement i and my luthier have made a strange discovery in my bass. it seems that my pre amp isn't a sterling like any that he has seen before, i looked for pics online and have decided that it is in fact a stingray preamp inside my sterling. i would just like for someone to help to determine if it is or not. this bass is one owner since new in 93 and the wiring looks all off for a sterling pup and preamp. it is a 3 coil pup, and as of now i am confused on whether i should wire it as per a sterling preamp or a stingray. any help would be appreciated.

I'll go out on a limb and suggest that you'll get better feedback if you create/post your own topic, in the bass forum instead of the guitar forum. Good luck.
