Severe Nut Problem On My JP6!

Hey, everyone.

Recently I've been noticing excess buzzing on my guitar even though I hadn't changed anything since the last time I set it up, and it was buzz free then.

Well, today after a string change I realized that my JP6's nut slots had been naturally filed down harshly! The D string is almost touching the first fret and the G, A and E strings have a fair share of buzzing no matter what.

My JP6 isn't even a year old yet and I basically NEVER use the trem (I currently have it blocked), is it normal to require a nut change this soon? I'm really dreading having to do it since the finish coat goes right over the nut's back and sides so I'm forced to do some cutting (I've done nuts before but that doesn't mean I like to).

Am I able to get a new properly sized nut through MM or am I forced to get one from Earvana at the approximate size and do all the filing and what not?

^Hehe, I actually wrote basically that same message to customer service before I posted here. I was just looking to get some insight to whether or not it was "normal" to have a nut wear out that quickly.

I guess next time I'll ask my EB/MM questions to the Harmony Central boards where the people are too crazy to be sticklers over the rules :/

You do realize that many of the forum members are not certified techs? If we start guessing and making assumptions we can actually ruin your instrument. These instruments are very delicate and first class. If you contact customer service, they are experts and know what to do.

When you blow out your car's engine. Do you take it to your neighbor to get it fix or a mechanic?

Well I've never heard of a nut wearing out so fast. Definately get the new nut from CS. Earvana and Buzz Feiten are different, EBMM have their own patented design.

I've also never heard of one wearing out so fast...truely bizarre. Don't stress it, EBMM Customer Service are top notch and i'm sure they'll get you sorted.

Best bet is to contact Customer Service as you already know from a few posts above.

Now, the reason why peeps keep telling you to go there is simple really. Whenever someone has an "issue" no matter how big or how small....everyone becomes and Internet Tech and then the whole thread gets to who is right and who isn't. Soon...it gets so far off track it is a waste of bandwidth. So, don't take it personally....

To answer your question. No. I have never had that happen before.

But isn't that where some of the fun is? Otherwise we just end up with a bunch of NGD posts and look at my photos. Personally I appreciate (and learn from) people who post tech issues like this.

And are we really concerned about bandwidth these days? Really? Everyone on dial-up please raise your hand....

Here is the problem....bandwidth is a figure of speech...

If you had pain in your abdomen and posted in a rabid medical forum of surgery freaks would you solicit opinion? No, you would go to a doctor.

One of the worst things in this black and white internet is that you cannot tell how someone is talking to you. Believe it or not...most of the posts if they were talking to you in person you would see that they actually have concern that you get your guitar right.

Armchair techs make me crazy.....they mean well but I wouldnt fly with an armchair pilot

As it is there is no certification or education required to call yourself a tech...you should see some of the "repairs" that "techs" do that we end up having to fix.......

The fastest and easiest way to get you r guitar right is to talk to us. I cannot tell you what would have been simple fixes have turned into nightmares by the owner of the guitar acting on advice from well meaning people who make diagnosis without seeing the guitar.

But I can give you one thing to try as the nut doesnt change ina year.....take this guitar to your dealer of a real live tech or if you feel comfortable try adjusting your truss rod a little....it sounds like it your neck may have straightened. Our truss rod is the easiest in the world...

You can go to Harmony Central and get advice but Im not sure that it will male your guitar better.....

Now try to stick around and see whats going on here...I personally would rather visit a site that shows you one offs, prototypes, advises you of whats coming up even before the dealers show up...has artists and even the ceo of guitar center. I think that is better than "My guitar this and that" I find that when going to a new place maybe sit around awhile before you move the furniture around....it may become clear why the couch is in that corner!

LEt me know if CS or the truss rod adjustment is satisfactory to you. I want your guitar to be perfect

Customer service told me to take the guitar to Long & McQuade (the dealer I bought it from) so that, "...they can either remedy the problem, ship the guitar to us or exchange the guitar for another Petrucci." So, I'll chalk that up for 'things to do today' along with get a hair-cut and wash my car

EDIT: Oh, and just so there's no confusion I did adjust the truss rod and saddles. The nut slots are simply too low now to be able to makes things right without a nut change.

Glad to hear they got you sorted out! Welcome to the forums. Stick around and have fun. We've all got the EBMM bug here. There are very large amounts of GAS and some really cool guys.

If you notice those little white-ish dots behind the nut slots those are actually scratches, so to speak, from the strings rubbing since they are so low.

That's the worst thing. I went out to get said hair cut only to realize all the places were closed, then went back home to get the guitar - like, I actually forgot it was Canada twice! I can't even go to my college to pay a bill. Well, at least I can still wash my car - SCORE!
