Ooohhh...

Now I'm going to have to go curl up in the corner and whimper for awhile.

A Trans Orange Sterling 5 /tort/rosewood/MHS is the only non-Bongo bass that really, really tempts me.

Like so many EBMM finishes, as stunning as it is in photos, in real life it's BETTER!

Well she's finally here. I have been waiting a long time for this baby to make her appearance. Once again the gang at EB has outdone themselves. I just have to decide FLATS or NO FLATS?

Well she now joins the rest of the family.

I'm a bit jealous. Those are some beautiful instruments.

Actually, I know what to call that now... not jealousy...GAS.

Good motivator.

A funny thing happened on the way to the gig last night...

I was looking forward to gigging my new Sterling 5's last night. I had a fill-in drummer set up for the night. He's a very good friend of mine, but he called me in the sfternoon and he was very sick. He had a 101 temp and asked if I could get anyone else to fill for the night. So I called my OTHER good friend. He said no problem, and was following me the 30 mile drive to the gig. He had told me before we left that his clutch had been acting up. Well sure enough about halfway there his clutch totally burns out. So, too make a long story short, we have to play the gig minus a drummer.

The gig still went well, but I really couldn't get a real feel for the basses without the beat. I mean they sounded great and they difference between flats on my PBB and rounds on the trans orange was very pronounced. I'm almost leaning toward putting flats on the Trans Orange. What do you guys think?

I have vowed never to play a gig without a drummer ever again...it's just not worth it. As much as I love to make fun of drummers, gigging sucks butt without them.

I personally wouldn't, just because of the tonal variety. Thats me, though. If you use flats more, then it's probably a good idea not to listen to me. I'm a noob anyway.

I'd actually string them up opposite...PBB with rounds, TransO with flats. But that's just my sense of style.....Bright bass? Dark sound. Sure to sound great either way.

Wasn't it that exact situation(drummerless) that led Larry Graham or whoever to try to "simulate" drums on bass, creating slap style?

*gig Update*

Well I played my first full-flegged gig with my Sterling 5 trans orange with the stock strings, and it was a very eye-opening experience.

It was amazing how well it cut through the mix, with very little volume and effort on my part. The gig was in a cavernous place with high stell ceilings. The place used to be a large department store that was sub divided into a bunch of businesses. The small rig that I was using was my Shuttle 6.0 and 2 112UL cabs. I only had the master at 8:00 and I was using my wireless to walk around the club to sheck the mix.

WOW!

I was astounded at the clarity and sound I was feeling in my chest. I told my wife (on our anniversary mind you) that if I wasn't already married to her, I would marry this bass!

I know that's a little crazy, but I wanted to get my point across at how amazing this bass sounds.

So you guys that are on the fence about the Sterling 5, jump in and get one!

Added bonus?

The bass weighs just 9 pounds!

My back thanked me the next morning.:D

Happy Father's day to me and all you Father's out here!

John
