Alright, here's an update. I went to the store today and played for about an hour on my SR, the 30th, and all the other SR's (and one Sterling) that they had.
The Sterling's neck is too small. Cool bass, but I doubt I'll ever try one again.
The 30th sounded better than all the other SR's in the store. Except for mine Though mine has fresh strings on it and I'm assuming the none of the basses in the store have fresh strings. It was however really playable. I like it a lot. I asked what the best price they could do on it was and was told $1600. In addition to the bubble in the finish near the bridge, there was also a ding on the back. Didn't mention that to the sales guy.
The 30th does sound differently enough from mine that it wouldn't be redundant owning both (rationalization at its best). I'm definitely keeping mine. I'll think I'll will be picking one up. It's a cool look and a great sounding bass. Having two basses for gigging is a good thing too, and it'd be nice if they were somewhat similar.
My take on the 2EQ/3EQ. The 3EQ is more versatile than my 2EQ, and I could see using it in a live situation, but I liked sound of the 2EQ more. It's more set and forget. And since there are no detents on the pots of a 2EQ, you just dial it in until you like the sound. Something psychological with me with the detents - I know I'm boosting or cutting whereas with the 2EQ, I don't know and don't care (unless it's dimed of course). The mids are really nice though if you needed a little more cut in the mix.
I found another store nearby with a 30th, but they were closing for a week as I walked in. Their 30th is stored in the back, so I would imagine is pretty spotless. I'm going to check that one out, and if it sounds good and is in good shape for a decent price, I'll probably take that over the GC one.
Oh yeah, my SR and the 30th felt about the same weight.
