Should I sell my dust gathering Guild Brian May guitar and buy a Rosewood ASS? I know its a no brainer, but some honest advice please!!

Bear in mind Brian May is my hero and I have always wanted a guitar like his. But this guitar is worth about £1500 and NEVER gets played. It just lives in its flightcase gathering dust. I would gig a rosewoood Axis all the time!

What do you think! My potential sale will be a result of your sage advice!

Personally, I'm fairly sentimental so I think that part of your post says it all. Long term it might be the one you regret selling, even if you just pull it out for fun now and then to wank on (I'm still talking about the guitar here  ) You'll have other oppurtunities to pick up a rosewood ASS but might not get a chance to regain the Brian May if you wanted it back (particularly your Brian May)

Just my honest advice. :)

It depends. Do you want to be a guitar PLAYER or a guitar OWNER?

If it isn't getting played then why are you keeping it? Sentimental reasons would be a decent answer. As an investment would be a silly answer. You need someplace to put your dust would be another bad answer.

Also, what would you do with the money? If you put it towards gear that you would actually use then sell it. If you'd just spend it on pints down at the pub, then hold on to it until you can think of a better use for the money.

I know how it goes. I have at least two guitars I should probably get rid of. It's not that I don't play them, but I don't need them to accomplish anything I can't do on other guitars I own. I think the only reasons I haven't sold them yet is that they are indeed good instruments and I fight the instinct of, "more 'stuff' is better..." ;)

Well i have a Kramer 85 Beretta with a no serial #backplate(very RARE)that only gets played at the house and its no EB/MM but i keep it for that 80's hairband stuff i loved when growing up and still love to play today and now that i have the AXIS i usually just play it but the Kramer will always be around!,it just makes me feel good to look at it i mean the beretta did define an era!
so if it inspires you ...you should keep....... it if it 's just a guitar thats worth $1500 that Brian endoresed then sell it and get something you will play and also inspires you.

Well, I am most definately a guitar player and not a guitar collector. All 5 of my balls get gigged all the time and I dont care for this 'How do I remove that tiny ding' mentality. All the guitars get played. They were made to be played. When I bought the May, they were a very rare breed indeed. These days what with the Burns copies, Guyton copies, KZ and a number of other makers, £2000 buys you a very accurate May replica.

My intended use for the cash is a Rosewood ASS (bought at $ price) and the rest of the cash for paying for my next USA adventure.

I am thinking along the selling route at the moment!

I am a HUGE Ace Frehley fan, and i had one of his Custom Shop Les Pauls...it was a $4000 guitar.

But it sat a lot, i decided to try something different and put that $4000 to good use and i did just that! I dont miss it that much.

If I was in your situation, which I sort of have been as I had 9 guitars and only played 2 of them, I'd sell it and spend the money on a guitar you're going to play and enjoy. That's what I ended up doing.

Tough decision...sentimental reasons are pretty important to me. but I guess if you don't play it or even take it out of its case, you aint really enjoying it anymore. In which case, a new rosewood axis (best neck EVER) might bring more joy into your life. sell! :D

Tim,

If you kept the Brian May hanging on a wall or something where you could admire it, I'd say keep it.

If it's collecting dust and you never take it out, I'd give some thought to selling it. And while you're at it, sell off all my extra gear that's laying around here.

My thoughts on this are that if you have to ask, you shouldn't sell it... Start saving and at £50 a pay you can have your Rosewood Axis in a year! And you'll still have the Brian May...

Another potential consideration is that a Guild Brian May is likely to continue to increase in value. A new Rosewood Axis is going to be worth 70% of what you paid for it 10 minutes after you pull it out of the case for the first time - five years from now you might get what you paid for it originally, depending, but the Guild will probably be up to £2000+ by then...

I probably love the Axis as a model just as much or more than anyone, but I know what it is to regret letting a guitar go (my Luke, anyone seen my Luke?) - if I had a Guild Brian May, I think I'd display it proudly on the wall... and still play my Axes ;)

After long consideration, I finally put my '79 Les Paul Custom w/Kahler on Ebay. I bought it new but never play it. I can't think of a more uncomfortable guitar to play. Soon as it sells, I'm getting another EBMM.

That guild Brian May was the first guitar I ever seriously dreamed about. I'd keep it. Defo. Is it one of the first ones from around '85 or one of the limited edition ones made in the mid 90's?

I just got my JP6. But, even though my N4 is asleep in her case (and has been since I got my JP) I know she will soon be back in action. If I seriously thought I'd never play her again, I'd still want to keep her. I've had my N4 13 years now. It'd be like saying goodbye to a good friend forever. I think Jimi D is right. If you managed to save up and get the ASS without selling your BM You'll feel alot better than the whistfullness that would accompany selling a guitar that has sentimental value so you can buy a new one.

I think you should go get her out of her case as soon as you can, and crank out some Brighton Rock :D and remember why you got her in the first place. :)

I say sell it.

If it's not getting played then it is a waste in my opinion as it could be providing so much joy to someone else who would play it all day every day...that's not you!

The Axis is clearly what you find to be "home" as far as guitars go and you have stated numerous times that Brian may is your major geeetar hero. So what do you need it for? If it was signed by Brian May I could understand perhaps keeping it.

I don't want this to sound harsh or anything but what I'm trying to say is that there will only ever be one Brian May and his playing seems to have influenced you so much that there is bound to be some of him in your playing. So take that and play your Axises and rock out being YOU! Not Brian.

I really hope you don't take offense to this post Tim. It's can be hard in a textual form sometimes to not sound like an ar$e. :p

I echo that sentiment. Best neck I've ever felt, that and it makes me think of chocolate plain cake do-nuts (yeah, I'm on a damn diet).

Its a '93 Guild that I have. Its been re-furbished with replica parts from a Japanese maker called KZ who makes BM replica guitars. A lot of the features on the Guild are not like the real thing, but KZ made me special parts to fit. This axe has a KZ scratchplate, whammy bar, knobs and pickup surrounders. It also been fitted with real Burns Tri-Sonics and has Schaller locking heads with the pearloid buttons. And its got Stew-Mac 149 wire in it and a Plek set-up. All the work was done by Charlie Chandler. I am still unsure what I should do! But I would say that I would NEVER gig the May, I dont like the sound! And the short 24" scale is weird. That Rosewood looks so appealing!
