that's a point, shop owners ALWAYS try and rip you off, they have to make a profit remember? i think they give you something like 40% of the actual value... I say sell privately or not at all.

Thank you very very much everybody so far for all the comments!

Special thanks go out to Sterling for taking time to even give a thought about such trivial matter!!!

You all convinced me: I will not settle for that trade. Had a hard time to fall asleep last night, because I kept asking myself those two questions "would you pay money for any of those basses you get" and "why would the shop owner settle for a 3 for 2 exchange, if the two he gets are so hard to sell".

Bottom line is: I don't need to sell now, and I wouldn't actually buy any of the basses offered at their marked prices (2200 USD for the Cutlas I, 3800 USD for the "artist" SR5, 2400 USD for the honeyburst SR4). I'll rather try to get a decent price for what I have to offer, and then look out for the exact instruments I want... (Stleath Bongo, 30th SR4, 20th SR5 (quilted maple top), minty Cutlass I with string thru body, and a custom designed SR4 for which I may buy a new ray and do all the mods via gifted luthiers).

The thought of adding three more Music Man instruments to my collection without dashing out any money simply was blurring my ability to think. I'm better now... :D

by the way the little comment regarding the custom shop was noted. we had nothing to do with the bass you described.

I'd like to see pics of that five string. sounds interesting

Went back to the store today to take photos. Here it is:

Oli, if you sell your Laklands then take your time to explore the used market you will still be able to get 3 MM's (and maybe 4) but :

- you'll be able to choose those you really need or want,
- you'll be able to find some that please you more, cosmetically speaking or anything else

Just my opinion, of course.

I wouldn't buy another 3 Stingrays if you already have 3. If the deal proposed seems too good to be true, it probably is. It's a good deal for the dealer. If you don't play the Laklands, try and sell them privately and then buy something different (SR5, Bongo, Sterling, something else).

By the way, that SR5 paint job is pretty cool.

roll the dice! trade the lakelands. keep what you like sell what you don't. the cutlas will be a hot seller on ebay. (those are getting harder to come by). the store might of gotten a good deal on those basses also. when i work for scam cash.... i mean sam ash. people walked in all the time, selling stuff real cheap, because they hit hard times.

I'd definitely agree with the private sale.

Nothing against the dealer, but they need to make money in order to stay open and times are hard for the smaller music stores.

And maybe it was an experiment by the Mythbusters! (these shows run one after the other on German TV)
