It’s that time again. GC has started signups for its annual guitar playing competition, “Guitarmageddon”. (my guitar playing friends (geeks) and I affectionately refer to it as Shredfest ’04) I would like to encourage everyone to get out there and try. Get up on the stage and show off one of your Balls. It can be scary as hell to do (Q: How many guitar players does it take to change a light bulb? A: Ten. One to change the bulb and nine to stand there with their arms folded and say “I could do it better than that”) but it’s also way cool. Last year we got discount cards for 10% off our next 5 purchases. You get to play in front of people. You get to see some really good guitar players in you area and laugh at others. Just get up there and do it. And if you are scared, get up there, do it, and be scared.

BTW if you are really super good don’t sign up for March 16th at the Tucson GC. Let a brother have a chance will ya.

Hey Norm,

What's the deal on this contest? I always see them advertising it.

Does everyone have to play to the same backing track? Can you do original material? If I did a fingerpicking thing would that be way outta place? Is there a time limit?

BTW I've bought a bunch of EBMM gear from guitar center. And I just read that GC did 1.2 billion in sales last year! I think that accounts for about 20% of all musical instruments and recording gear sold.

You get a CD with 18 different backing tracks on it and you have to perform on top of any one you choose. The tracks are rock, blues, country, swing, funk... All different kinds. Most of them are your standard 1 4 5 progressions in G. then you get 2 minutes to solo if you want. Just go sign up! If you chicken out ... well that's your choice. They provide the amps but you can bring any effects you want. There is more info on GC's site but why waste your time there. Go...Sign up!!!!

God, I don't think I could do it.

Me, my buddy and his 2 daughters (11 and 13) will be playing 4 songs at the girls valentine's day party. I'm already nervous about playing in front of 15 teenage girls much less a roomfull of guitar geeks!

you think the geeks at GC are good? wait until you see some of the players at Okra's on the 21rst down in Manassas...at the FDP jam. 5Strats and Pinetree are pretty awesome...and I don't consider myself much of a slouch.

I think you will be fine regardless..its all about having fun above all else.

That is going to be a great jam!
