I have a funny story about these kind of comps.

Way back in the 80's - (I know that's too far back for some of us to remember, and for others it's before you were born.) We had a guitar comp here in Australia called "The Rebel Yell Guitar Battle" or something like that.

Anyway everyone went in doing there best Vai, Malmsteen etc impersonations.

In came a guy who played Hoochie Coochie Man, and guess what... he won.

Why - because he stood out from the crowd, not because he was necessarilly better but because he was different.

There is only so much shredding you can listen to before it all sounds the same (about 10 seconds for me)

That's my tip for any of you entrants. Of course if you lose I had nothing to do with it, but if you win send the cheques this way.
:D

Well here's my 2 cents. As a guitar player i think its important to listen to and appreciate all styles, but that's just me. On one hand, you got your Collins and Rosingtons, who hang on a riff for dear life till the cramps cause them to change, ala Freebird. Then you've got your Gilmours, whose solos wear heavy on your soul, simple yet effective. Then there's guys like Angus, with a distinctive tone, his blues filled chops rip through most effectively. Of course there's Clapton, Hendrix, Page, and Blackmore...classic chops, but oh so memorable. But I can't stop there, I mean I don't understand when people continue to poke fun at shredders. You telling me you can't listen to and appreciate Malmsteen's Rising Forse CD, or Vai's Passion and Warfare, or Satch's Surfing with the Alien. These are magnificant creations that literally make me weep when I listen to them, just like a Gilmour solo. I don't know, but as a guitar player, I take in as much as I can...I never look down on any player that expresses himself, I mean that's what he does. Do I shred...hell no, but I try and squeeze in a bit of everyone, listening to all, appreciating their craft, applauding their masterpieces. Guitar players come in all sorts...and I can get excited just as easily from a B.B. King solo as I can from a Mattias Eklundh solo...yet their styles are at two different ends of the spectrum. Sorry guys but that's my 2 cents!

Raz my man, sorry if I upset you. I wasn't slagging off shred. I think that like all music it has it's place. I grew up in the shred heavy 80's and I still have lots of the original shred guys albums. Hell I'm off to see Satch next month when he comes here to Aus & I saw Vai last year.

I agree with you that it's all about musical expression. I do listen to shred and appreciate it for what it is... amazing technical prowess.

My problem is that as I get older I listen more for the "gaps' in a solo than for the actual notes. I love Peter Green's stuff and BB & Carlton, no wasted notes.

I think shred got a bad name because there were too many blindingly fast guitarists playing too many notes and not enough music. I guess it's guys like that Michael Angelo fella that perpetuate the stereotype of shredders - too many notes, not enough soul. That's not to say that they are all like that.

I still listen to Paul Gilbert or Vai on the way to my guitar lessons to get me pumped.

Interestingly i don't know if any of you have seen the Crossroads DVD yet but if you have I was wondering what you thought of how the Vai song sat compared to all of the other ones.

Anyway in signing off Raz - hope I didn't upset ya man...

It wasn't directed at you, it was just a general statement...as far as Crossroads go, I was upset the first time I saw it cause Vai lost :D
Anyway, there are days when the distortion has to be off, and the notes need to be less shredded, I agree totally, and that's the beauty of music.

As if anyone cares, I did very well last night and I am advancing to the finals here in Tucson.

They made a big stink about not allowing video cameras so there is no recording of the show. If my account wasn't F'ed up I would love to post some pictures of me playing my Ernie Ball Music Man John Petrucci infront of people.

One way cool thing I did was to use the crunch setting on a Marshall stack and the Piezo through an acoustic amp for the entire song. Man did it sound good.

Hey Jon! The guitar you put back together for me is a winner! I tip my hat to you sir in thanks and gratitude.

Hey NorM - Congrats

Just out of curiosity, why the Petrucci for the competition vs. the custom switched-EMG-abalone Silo, a Morse, or one of your other guitars.

Playing style planned for the competition? Song selection using something from Petrucci/DT? New set up by Mr. Gitarz just made it the best playing guitar at the time? etc.?

I think it would be interesting to know, with the selection available, what goes into the choice.

Fair questions all and I am happy to respond.

The Pet is a brand new guitar. While the BD EMG Silo is what I consider perfect for me and my style, The pet after Jon had it was just the best playing guitar I had ever played. While practicing this last week I noticed the thinner neck of the pet meant that the distance for my pinky to travel to hit a note on some of the faster runs was further. (I have to close my hand tighter) Some of the notes on the scale got left out. Unless you were my guitar teacher or me you would never notice. So the Silo is the main guitar for me but I just really wanted to use the Pet for this one. Petrucci is a big name among guitar players. Right now the EBMM Pet is a very desirable guitar. I would be amiss if I didn’t say I used the guitar to try to be intimidating to other players. One of the judges said he was very knowledgeable about the kind of guitars being played. He had no questions for me. (Having no questions means you either know everything or nothing) So I think that plan worked. Last years winner even asked to play the guitar for a bit. Right now he is rethinking about the artist’s model he currently plays. Also someone challenged me to play the Pet because they said the Pet was the prettiest guitar and sounded the best. No need for me to say I love the finish on that guitar.

The Morse is a 22 fret hardtail. The Axis is still tuned down a half step. The Silo Bass is not right for the competition. My coach played the Black Silo. I never play the Sunburst silo. The teal silo would have worked great. The piece I wrote needs 24 and a whammy bar. I am getting a whammy on my new Morse. For pieces not needing 24 frets it will be hard to not play the Morse.

For the competition you are provided a CD with 18 backing tracks and I just get to write the cool show off stuff to play on top of it. The song was titled Funk Hip Hop or something like that. The main reason I chose this was because I noticed the judges love it when you do stupid stuff while on stage. It was a song I could play and dance with at the same time. It turns out that dancing is infectious. Apparently, the judges loved it.

For the finals I will have to do a solo piece as well. Right now I am contemplating:
A warped version of EVH’s Cathedral
A rearrangement I did for Fur Elise that rocks
Pure Bach
Satriani’s Midnight
Making up something where I play the Silo Bass Guitar and another guitar at the same time.

Congrats Norm! Sounds like that was a lot of fun! (We don't have GC up here- but would have been neat to give it a go.)

I'm picturing the bit from Spinal Tap - the Nigel Tufnel solo where he plays one guitar while strumming the other with his foot ... :D

Hey NorM and aaronb,
Congrats guys!!!

I wish I had the ***** to get up in front of a crowd and try this. Alright so I play Ernie Balls, but playing one and having a pair to do that are 2 different things.

Anyhow way to go and keep us up to date on later performances. NorM, you gotta post some pics of the rare sparkly Burnt Apple Petrucci in action!!!!
