Hey guys,

I love my Silhouette Special but I want an additional guitar with a humbucker in the neck (and preferably with Floyd Rose; maybe an Axis?)...

How does the Axis neck compare to the Silhouette neck (that I have grown very fond of)? Is it very similar or are there any largely noticeable differences in the profile? The only difference that I see listed in the specs is that the Axis neck is 1/16" narrower than the Silhouette at its last fret.

Or maybe a Steve Morse... how does that neck compare to the Silhouette?

I find the necks on the Axis to be very similar to the Silo Spec. I don't think getting used to the neck of the Axis would be a big adjustment at all for you. The one difference I do note is the lack of body contour on the Axis.... that would take more getting used to IMO.

Never tried a Morse.

I have both, basically the silo neck does feel a bit wider than the axis and it is thinner as well - but because the axis neck is narrower it doesnt feel thick, its nice for me to go back and forth between the two and they are both very comfortable, as for the morse its somewhere in between but closer to a silo and is great - you should see if the bodies are comfy for you, they do not have contours - both like teles -

They're pretty close. The only spot that I can tell a difference is frets 1-5 on the Axis. It's a little thinner, at least to my perception. If anything, it's easier to play than the Silo, IMHO.

The arm contour is the only thing missing on the Axis. Otherwise, the adjustment between the two is minor. Both are great guitars. Both have belly contours.

When I had one of each (Axis and Silo), the Silo body was more comfortable than the Axis, mostly due to the arm contour. The neck on the Silo felt just a little chunkier than the Axis.

My mileage varies from some others, I guess. I'm much more comfortable with the Silo Special neck. The Axis neck is thicker by the thumb (top) and tapers down to the high E string. The shape is asymmetrical, whereas as the Silo is a constant C shape.

Keep in mind, though, each same model neck shape is a little different. One of my Silos has a considerably slimmer neck than the other.

I'm betting the rosewood one is slimmer than the maple. Am I right or wrong, Bruce? After trying a few Silo Specs aside from mine, I think that's the conclusion that I've come to.

Right you are. Though I think I recall Rob (the AL Rob :D) said his were just the opposite.

yep all my rosewood board ASS's and Silo's feel much fatter than the maple versions. Oh well!

I guess it just goes to show you that all necks are different--at least subjectively, if only minutely from the perspective of objective measurements.

Agrees, Rob. It makes each guitar as unique as the individual knucklehead. ;)
