Any opinions on the coil split tone of a neck positioned PAF PRO? I'm looking to possibly do this for my HSH Silo, but am thinking the resulting tone may be lacking the character quality I'm looking for in a single coil. Aside from entertaining a possible SSH pickguard swap, I wanted to hear if anyone else has done this and hear their opinions. Gosh, if you have sound samples, that would be the cat's meow!

The splitting of my stock HSH Silo sounds close enough to a single-coil that the audience won't notice at volume. Is a PAF pro any different? Not sure... or is PAF pro stock in the Silo?:confused:

True, I guess HSH will never be as convincing as having SSS, but it's close enough to pass for me.

I think it depends on the humbucker itself. Some split better than others, but again they never sound like a true single coil. That being said I really like the split humbuckers on my Y2D, and gives me that extra option.

With DiMarzio pickups, I've heard that on a lot of their models the two coils are not identically wound/voiced so each coil should sound a little different on their own. Does that help? What about parallel vs series vs single coil?

My 2 cents is that you go ahead and wire in the mod - if your going the push/pull way - its totally reversible with no harm to the instrument (cosmetic or otherwise).....or if your not hot for the resulting sound - you could also just choose not to engage it (then buy another Silo - hahaha).

+1 regarding a split humbucker not being able to match a dedicated single coil...these mods are always a compromise of design.

Personally, I'm sucker for versatility - so I don't know why all humbucker guitars are not modded for a selectable coil split - just 'cause - why not?!
