I hear you man... That's why I'm REALLY tampted to eventually get one, strip out the silent circuit, dump in Kinman's Woodstock set for the neck and mid, and probably a Tonezone or X2N for the bridge. Hahahaha... Now THAT is HOT.:D

Or actually, just an SSS with a Kinman Woodstock Plus set would be hot enough.

Lionel's talkin' just MY language ;)

Chris Kinman's Single Coils in all my Silo Specials - neck and middle on the Pearl Purple and the Candy Red - combined with DiMarzio ToneZone and AirZone. Kinman's Traditional MK2 set in the Pearl Lavender.
The '56 Classic singles actually don't break into overdrive as easily as the ones in the Woodstock (or PLUS) sets, but they however also DO hit the amp quite hard in the face... :D

Actually, while I'm damn impressed with the Hank Marvin set (my fav), the Woodstock Plus set is the one set I'm itching to buy back again. Heheh...

But I prefer the Hank Marvins over the Traditionals... Tried those before?

Actually not - quite hard to get a hand on them here. They are not soooo very popular here and I was told they were the ultra-quack and twang with higher output, which I'm afraid wouldn't be my taste.
What were your experiences soundwise ?

The AT1 is lovely in the Silo, I have some amazing guitars and this one has become my fave for live use.

The AT1 is quite thick sounding with just the right amout of top end. I'm told similar to a Breed.

It's absolutely beautiful split with the Mid cruiser, add a touch of chorus to your lead tone and solo for DAYS !!!!!

there are harmonics all over the place.

My silo is my only maple necked guitar and I found it too bright, but with my new pickup set is fantastically versatile.
When I 1st got it I couldn't see the fuss, so I set about making it right for me.. but I do mean, for me !
Refretted with 6105 stainless frets to give me a more substantial feel and control, a new nut , ( I found the graduated one to dull the open strings ) and new passive pickups.
I'd actually love to let another silo fan try it to see what they think.... me I LOVE it.

I'd add an AT1 pickup without hesitation, except they're not avail in the UK, I was lucky to find one on E Bay.

Quack and Twang? really? Not to my experiences... I find them SUPER bell tones, and clangy. They're quite hot, but not Woodstock level outputs. Actually, they sound so unique, they don't sound like anything else Iv'e heard from other single coils. The bell tone is exaggerated.

Here's sound clips of that set:

Finally the Breed gets an honorable mention! My split Breed with a stock single middle is outstanding to my ears.

Thanks for the heads-up Lionel ! ! !
I'll have a look at that set first time I can get my hands on one...
There's quite some Kinmans around, but as I said - haven't seen a single Hank Marvin set up 'til now...

I have Kinman's in my Suhr and Anderson

The Marvin set is really high output and warm and I have the 62's in my Anderson.

I actually prefer the ones in the Anderson.

If you e mail Chris, he'll advise you, he's really cool to deal with.

You took out the stock pups in your Anderson? I've tried some of the TA guitars before. LOVE the stock pup tones...

I did, yes.
Only the 2 singles, I love the H2+ in the bridge.

I found the SA's only sounded good when tapped but then I hated the noise.

Trust me I agonized for months about swapping them out, but I'm so glad I did

I will reiterate that I'm really impressed with the Dimarzio's in my SS, which was inspired by Andy Timmons, but my Anderson is really special.

Damn... That's nice... TA's humbuckers are really something else.

I wish EBMM made their own pups. It's like dribbling the ball all the way to the goal post, but not kicking the ball in.

I think after owning and playing 3 20ths, the original Silo sort of sounded dull to me. The inbetweens are not as nice as a Silo Spec (becuase I prefer singles), and the entire vibe of the 20ths is just too nice.

Don't you feel that too? Now that you have a 20th?:D

Having owned a 20th and various silo specials i much prefer the single coil tone too, I found a HSH Silo in a store here last year and spent a few hours with it side by side with my silo special's and AL's, I didnt care for its in-between tones at all, the silo special was much more authentic. quite rightly too seeing its primarily a single coil axe. Fine axe though.

being a 24fret guitar also changes the sound

I've owned BOTH

I found the neck on the Luke to be too Vee shaped for my hand and I don't like EMG's, they don't breathe naturally to my ears.

This is purely my personal opinion.

I now have a Sil Special ( see earlier pics in this thread ) and I much prefer the neck shape, so much so, that I've heavily modified mine to make sure it's a keeper.

Build wise, they're identical.. ie.. perfect.

Personally I'm not a fan of EMG's, but nor am I a fan of the noise you get from true singles.

For a true single coil tone with no noise, I LOVE Kinmans but I couldn't afford them for my SS, and as I've become a huge fan of Andy Timmons, I decided to try his pickup combination....

I didn't like a cruiser in the neck, even though it was a Bridge model like he uses, so I mailed Dimarzio and they suggested the Fast Track 1, I love it.

They don't have a pure single coil tone ( obviously ) but they're pretty great I have to admit.

I'll never change the guitar in any way now !

Wolf, how do you have your electronic components set-up? I also got a Fast Track 1 in the neck position, and I love it, but for some reason it sounds quite middy and not AS bright as I would think it would be. I have 500K volume and tone pots and a 47uf capacitor. I thought that this would make them especially brighter sounding. Still love the tone though.
And wouldnt you use the Neck Cruiser for the neckl position instead of the bridge model? I am not aware that Timmons uses a bridge model for the neck.
