I had to sell my new Silo Special for some medical bills. I actually had enough left over to buy this little number. 2001 Blue Pearl, Rosewood, trem. The added bonus is that the previous owner had loaded it up with EMG's. EMG 85, SA and S.

I haven't tried out the EMG's yet. I spent about an hour cleaning it up, restringing, and putting a set of EB strap locks on. The other cool thing is that the guy I bought it from included the original pickups and the silent circuit. So i can swap it back to stock with a little soldering.

I finally got to play around with it, although not on my rig (2 month old is asleep). I really like the 85 and the SA. The S in the neck position is taking me a while to warm up to. It's very vintage-y, and a little sterile. But I usually love high output hot pickups. It might be worth swapping it for another SA. I will say, it does do a great Lukather tone. I've got some Toto and Luke loaded on my MP3 trainer, and it can really nail that tone he gets.

The part that I'm most surprised with is that I really like the rosewood board. I've been so pro-maple lately that i wasn't sure I'd dig the rosewood tone. But I really do like it. It seems to have the same feel and response that maple does, but it's warmer and even toned.

Ok, I finally got to plug in to my rig, and I'm liking the EMG's more. They love gain/distortion. The S has a good bell-tone modern strat sound to it, and the extra gain gives it more punch (which I couldn't get with the trainer).

I'd really like to wire up the original pickups and have a second pickguard. Might need to give Pete a call next week . .. . .. . . .
