So, I did some investigating and found out that my silhouette special was due for a new "updated" 5 way switch, thanks to A.J. Instead of my 'Homer Simpson' style soldering, I decided to send it to a local tech who has a great reputation for his meticulous care for guitars. He's a luthier and tech. He not only re-wired my silo and cleaned up my crummy soldering, he insisted on installing copper shielding in the cavity. Has anyone else seen this done? I know that the pick guard is shielded, but I didn't even think about this. Any comments?

I may be mistaken but I don't think this is needed for EBMM guitars.

1 I think the original paint play that role, so if you didn't refinish your guitar no need
2 you have the silent circuit on your Silo to take care of the hum

That kind of work makes a difference to unshielded strats so it may make a difference for you too. And the silent circuit can;t remove all types of noise. Why didn't he shield the pickup cavities too?

But I was under the impression that EBMM already have a shield of conductive paint under the finish, so if the tech's work doesn't make any difference, that would explain why. Send A.J. an email and ask him. In any case, I would not be happy if a tech did work like that without asking me first.

Does it help at least?

I also share that impression, most of the techs don't have a clue about EBMM and tend to treat them as regular Strat. That's why I do most of that job myself now

Wow, thanks guys. As far as the silent circuit goes, it's been deactivated. I installed the Air Norton in the neck position. I didn't realize that about the paint, though. Dr. Kev, i wondered about the pickup cavities also. He sent me the picture yesterday. Perhaps he's not done yet. I'll ask today. Thanks to all, guys.

I shielded my Strat and my Tele and it DID make a difference.
My AL (older one before the Silent Circuit) has shielded paint in the cavity.

The shielding in the cavity and on the inside of the pickguard may help with some noice, as it shields parts of the pickups and electronics (it also prevents static charging with plastic pickguards). but as the pickups stick out of the pickguard - some noise will still remain - the kind of noise thet the pickups get from outside... magnetic waves... fluorescent tubes...

I´m not an expert in explaining this but it must be like this :)
