I currently have a BD Silo and a Silo Special and I have to say for the most part they are very much alike. I prefer the Silo Special though. I have trouble when I play the Silo, I hit the selection switch. I'd heard others say the same thing and I thought, the dudes losing it, but after owning one for a few months, I find myself saying the same thing.

They are both great guitars and if you get the chance to try them both do it. I got the Silo Special first.

What about the 20th Ann. Silo? I highly recommend this!!

I dig the silo special more, hum single single is cool for me, I get all the tones I need that way, and I have my axis for the neck bucker, but I like the looks of the special more for some reason as well -

24 frets makes the math easier for me. Then I really like a humbucker in the neck position just like my Hero Steve Morse. I really like that sound.
Which ever you choose is right for you makes you right. But I was happy to share what I thought.
Thanks for asking!

I've never played a Silo, but I love the Silo Special. I really like the single coil neck pickup with silent circuit.

I love the Silo, hands down, bar none, period! I played a Sil Special for a hot minute and although it sounded great, it felt like I was cheating on my wife with her younger sister:D ! After taking one hell of a long shower, I pledged my allegiance to the Silo and we've been together ever since! A true story......;)

The only important difference for me.......No lefty Silhouettes!!
(Actually I don't mind, since I don't like neck humbuckers and have never understood why guitars come with more than 12 frets!)

I for one am above the 12th fret pretty often, and I really prefer 24 frets. As Norm said, it makes more sense when you do the math, and I like the concept of having a full octave on 24 as opposed to a 7th on 22

i think in general i'm a single coil guy, i really dig beautiful clean tones. My 20th Silo sounds amazing, plays like a dream. But i'll always reach for a single coil axe if i want inspiration. Now i realise its been less than a day since i got my DD Silo, but it fits right into my playing so well. I think you want more rockier tones go with a Silo, or a Special with HSS, but if you want classic stratty tones ( but better!! ) go with a SSS Silo Special.

I think it all comes down to the tone you want.
The Special is very vintage in my opinion, whereas the regular Silo is more modern sounding.
The SS wasn't for me. What sold me on the Silo was position four on the pickup selection! Whoa Baby!!!! So nice!

LOL!!! No kidding.
I tried enough EBMMs to be able to give opinions before, but it just felt too weird, so I stayed away all together. :)

Silo Specials are more special or they wouldn't have named it the Silo Special.

I'd love having a Silo! but I'd still wind up playing the Special more often, mainly cuz I like using a single coil on the neck so much.

Rob, the rosewood board sounds really different on the Special, dunnit?

I question, though, whether position 2 sounds very different between the SSS and HSS, and there should be no difference between the other positions, except for 1, of course.

Bruce, the rosewood makes a big difference alright, i like i much better than my old maple blue silo special!!!

I have to say the bridge/middle position is very different on my SSS though, splitting that humbucker just doesnt do it for me. The quack is a lot better, very stratty, i could never get that tone with the HSS.

Mmm, remember, position 2 sounds very different on my rosewood than is does on my maple, as do all p'ups. I think most of the difference you're hearing in position 2 is the rosewood board. Would love to hear an SSS and HSS position 2 apples/apples comparison someday.

My first Silo Sp encounter (about 7 years ago) floored me, but I had a dim view of the bucker in the bridge. The store owner said, ah, but that splits coils. I was still skeptical, and totally into single coils only. Even when I bought my first one off the Bay, I was skeptical of the bucker. What a nice surprise I had! Now the bucker fits right into my tone locker. To me it's still the Swiss Army knife of guitars, and a lot easier to carry than 3 guitars.

I must add that the HSS is still why the Luke still interests me a lot.

Yes but position 2 sounds the same on my AL's too, gotta be more than the humbucker making the difference.

i have notcied something else too, the neck on my DD Silo Special is much more comfortable ( read fatter ) than my old Blue Pearl Silo Special, which was all maple, it was very thin, too thin for my liking. The DD neck feels much nicer, perfect in fact, i wonder if this is due to the rosewood fretboard?? My friends rosewood silo special feels the same as my DD.

Ok, that's an interesting observation.

I don't think so, on the fatter rosewood neck. My rosewood board neck is actually a little slimmer than my maple board silo. I think they're each a little different.

Do you find the rosewood any slower or faster than your old Special? How bout compared with the AL?
