Does anyone know how Simon get's his tone? Strings, equipment, etc? I think he does some pretty cool things on the bass. Would love to get his sound. Thanks

strings

I also read somewhere that for the Disintegration tour he lowered his strings way down so he would get heavy fret buzz. But how can you do that and make it sound so cool?

Well alot of it is probably in his technique. He could probably get his sound on almost any setup.....

For Fascination, you can get an approching sound when using brand new strings and a pic (and bump the highs a bit to make the buzzing come out).
But his sound is not allways so bright (for exemple on Lullaby, one of my fav).
And the sound is sometimes really low and dark, for exemple on the album Pornography.
I like the way Simon Gallup plays.

He does not use a phaser, it's a flanger and/or a chorus, and overdrive (all Boss). Also he doesn't stick to a particular bass model, each period has its own model. In the last concerts he has been playing a Thunderbird, but he used Rickenbackers (Pornography), Epiphones (the "pirates" bass, Wish/WMS days), Stingrays (Head on the door), Fenders (older stuff, Fender VI a lot in Disintegration) etc. In the Trilogy video you can notice how he changes the bass for each different album. He also owns a Dick Knight Custom.

There's a lot of phaser and flanger in his work quite often. To my ears, I hear flats too.

Mark is very accurate here: lots of phaser and envelope filters

by the way Mark I've just listened to the Pink Floyd songs on your Reverbnation blog page, nice work there too. What bass did u use on "Breathe" ?
