have the sinlge coils changed much over the years on the silo or silo special? I know the humbucker has changed. My single coils are low output i guess, but they can handle everything i throw at them, unlike my old strats which farted out as soon as some gain was turned on. The silo special pups stilll retain clarity at high volumes, they are awesome, same goes for the AL pups. Louder you go the better they get!

the hum is bad on mines with high gain, I was thinking of putting a air norton S or cruiser.

If they're the same custom DiMarzios as what's in the Special, I'd consider them medium output. Most single coils will hum through a high gain/distortion amp. You may have to use a noise gate or some such, or switch to noiseless single coils (which don't have the same tone to my ears). I've heard Kinman makes some nice sounding ones. Lace Sensors are pretty quiet, but I don't like 'em, too dark.

The Silo Special pickups are amazing to my ears

I think they're great. No pickup does it all, but these cover a wide area. I still toy with the idea of dropping a couple Fralin vintage hots into one of my HSS's. But then I play it as it is and say, naaah. It's too nice to mess with.
