I used to own a Stingray but sold it, I now want it back but want something with alot of punch. I know speakers and amp setting have to do with it. And im not looking for a Dual Humbucker. Does a single humbucker have much punch? Im looking to replace my Precision bass. Im willing to part with the tone but not the punch.

Welcome to the Board

I think my Single-h Sterling is very punchy...I'm sure some folks with more technical knowledge than I will chime in soon, but my understanding is that the 'ray is even punchier.

I'm an ex-P Bass player myself, and I very much consider the Musicman to be a serious upgrade. I don't think you'll be sorry!

Oooh, that makes me even more excited about getting mine in the next few days.

It may just be my setup but my SR5 and GK 700RB II combination is fantastic as far as punch goes.

I can't complain about the punch my ordinary everyday SR5 single H has. Nope. No problems in that dpartment.

There IS no Music Man bass without instrinsic punchiness, is there?

That said, it's a toss up for me between my 30th Stingray and my single H Bongos.

Smack! Wham! Ooof!

another factor is how you wire the humbucker..??
and its position relative to the bridge

One of the "percs" of working set up here at EB is that I get to try out all of our instruments. Being a bass player, I'm in bass "heaven". Each of our basses have a "punchiness" about them. But for me pound for pound the Sterling does it for me. The bongo will do it, but you hve to adjust the EQ a little. SR, a little more adjust ment. Oh yeah, the 30th has it, too. But for me, right out of the box, Sterling! I'm part owner of a muay Thai gym, I'm a former fighter and now a coach. I know what "punch" is!

I just finished doing an intense comparison this weekend between a Sterling, an American Jazz Deluxe and a current P-Bass.

The Sterling has more punch than the Fenders together, so if that is what you are looking for, go for it.

While I wasn't wild about my 30th SR when I got it - I keep pulling it out of its case cuz its tone and punch has me mesmerized. I find that I play my Sterling HS in H position most of the time. Really starting to dig the Single H growl, tone and punch - good stuff. Can't believe I played jazz style basses for so long...

I'm a fan of double pickup variety, but for some reason, I keep going back to the single H basses.

You know, I think BP put something in my drink.
