I can't remember the name of that type of joint, but it's easier to see from the heel side...

It's sort of a mortise and tenon type of affair, with the slots adding strength to the join.

I might well be wrong, but I think it looks like this in cross section (difficult to see with the strap button and the neck pocket)...
