Hey all. I was pondering today as I was playing my SUB whether or not there is any noticeable difference tonally between a bass with a slab body, such as a SUB, and a bass with a contoured body like our beloved StingRays and such. Also, I have a nagging question regarding the passive EQ setup in some of the SUBs. My fretless SUB is passive, yet sounds just as hot and complex as my active SUB, but overall is a bit darker sounding, which I love. I guess I'm wondering how exactly the passive EQ functions, since I thought any boost/cut features had to be aided by an active pre. Cheers, and thanks for any enlightenment provided!

cant say I notice any tonal difference between the 2 band Ray I sold and the SUB I just got.I do miss the forearm and ribcage contours but dont think about it when I'm playing it.
not too sure about the passive/active thing.mines is active.mebe the system works similiar to the G&L passive treble bass system on some of their instruments.....I'm sure the passive system works great on your fretless.
someone who knows the technical side of the passive eq will be along soon enough

if it is passive it would be cut only.

that's what i was thinking, but when i start out with everything rolled completely back, then turn the knobs as i would with my active SUB to add bass or treble, it functions in the same way, although with a much narrower range of effect on the overall sound. any thoughts?

definitely... the passive setup is a bit warmer to my ears, as well as a bit darker, which is magic to my ears. i love a stingray/sub fretless sound.
