I can't slap.

Now that I think about it, there isn't as much slap around as there used to be, is there? Or maybe I'm just not listening to where it's at.

I dig the aggressiveness of the tone of EBMM basses, and I don't think it's only applicable to slap.

I agree that it has it's place. I was watching a video demoing the Ampeg SVT-CL and SVT8-Pro and they used a SR5 (!!!). But all the person did was slap a bunch.

I thought for sure that they wouldn't slap when demoing Ampeg products...

Look again at the guy in the video, he's not playing a SR5, it's a Lak''dudepit''land

Bps post looks silly since i deleted my post after realizing that it had already been pointed out that it was a lakland (didnt read the second page of this thread).

One thing I haven't heard anyone talk about is the Ray's ability to growl. While it can be very clean and hi-fi sounding it can also produce a really nice growl (especially in front of the right amp!). It has more attack, snap and growl than any other bass I have ever played before.

The HH Rays have even more growl. A deep from the bowels of Hell, primal kinda growl especially when the strings are new.

I recently picked up on this slapping business (Tony Oppenheim's book is the shiznit!) However, I tend to stay on the Larry Graham side of it. And while the BIQ has been put out as a Lakland anyway I still want to say as an aside that the Ray is the right bass for folks who want to be like the guy who plays in his tightie whities.

I cant slap.

i was a bit surprise. i figured that you were a heavy slapper due to the way you designed your basses. stingrays and sterlings are very popular with the "technical" bassist. but, i'll tell you secret (i can't slap either). i got into stingrays for the growl (and clarity). most sales people sell them for the slap. if you notice thats the first thing most sales people do when trying to sell a eb/mm.

slapuhappy

research someancient copies of Bass Player to read what Anthony Jackson has to say about the slap technique and the musicalapplicationofit's characteristic tones ....
the basic idea is that it's often the musical quivalent of red spandex pants on a fat chick ... certainly "loud" in some way, but not necessarily as a tastyfashion statement
