Hi All,

Recently acquired an SMY2D with Floyd and am quite pleased apart from the standard string gauge it came setup with which are 9s of some sort.

Can anyone tell me if they've had the floyd version setup with 10-13-16-26-32-42 and if so, what were the pitfalls or gotchas if any? This is my first FR equipped axe so I'm not sure what to expect; I figure there may be a good reason why the hard-tail models come with 10 but the FR with 9s..

Thanks in advance,

Tom.

i have 10-13-16-26-32-42 on my y2d FR, i did a little setup by myself.

Thanks for replying; I just wanted to get a general feedback of the experiences of anyone and whether or not it worked for them as it's an unusual gauge combination.

I have both my Floyd and Hard Tail Y2Ds set up with sets of standard 9-42 Super Slinkys. It just makes it easier to buy strings and I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference.

The 10-42 is a hybrid of 9s and 10s that Morse uses (I think it's in the FAQs somewhere and has been mentioned here before).

And as the Floyd sits flat on the body there are (at least in my experience) far fewer issues with changing string gauge than there are with a fully floating one.

The only reason there is a difference in string gauge between the hardtail and tremolo models is because those are the string gauges that Steve Morse uses on his guitars.

I have my y2d tremolo model strung with 10s, no issues. Do what works best for you!

I've changed the strings last night and so far so good.. The 9s were very easy on the fingers but these hybrids do give more body through the pickups; added a third slightly thinner spring to the block with the screws easing the back-plate so that the action remains roughly the same but with more positive feel.

This was all done by a local guitar tech btw, allowing me to stand over and ask a bunch of questions which is cool; he also buffed and polished it to perfection.

Great guitar btw..I'm glad I made the move on it as it's quite rare here in Australia. Wanted one ever since I first saw Morse playing his number one with the London Symphonic Orchestra.

Where abouts are you located?
I agree that EBMM are a bit light on the ground over here, unless you know where to look ;)

You might be interested; there's a second hand 20th ann Silhouette with floyd, dimarzios and hardcase for 3600 in that narrow second-hand store on Chapel across from Revolver.
