Man oh man, what a strange set of events. I change something that was negatively affecting the playability of the bass and I am wrong?

Like I have said, drop me a PM if you want to continue talking about this, because bashing me, when you do not know the whole story, is getting to be a little bit like "spreading disinformation".

My hypothesis about the shim may be incorrect, but someone should step up, PM me, and teach me why.

brother I was not bashing you, and in my last post I said I tend to come on a little strong in defense of EBMM basses, I meant no harm, but at the same time I did not want people to think that the shim is a quality issue, but to let them know it is what it is, a part of the setup If needed. In your original post you made it sound like a shim had been added and that it was a bad thing, I was simply informing you that it was a factory installed item, I think we should get back to having fun and enjoying what this forum is all about.

OK If you feel better without it great. Whatever it takes to get you happy. Not a contest or a challenge. You have improved your action by 2/64th of an inch and somethimes that is all it takes for happiness.

Well, #### a duck. I called EBMM CS early this year because I found one of these shims in my neck pocket (a pink one). I thought it could've been put in by a previous owner because I was having trouble dialing in a setup on my Bongo. Anyway, the guy who I talked to at EBMM said he worked in setup for a couple of years and he couldn't recall ever having used a shim. On this advice I left it out of my Bongo.

Now I'm reading that my Bongo actually did come with a shim from the factory. Is this a part I can get without having the original to trade (like you do with necks / pickups)? If I still have this shim it would probably take me a couple weeks to find it so at this point I'd rather just get a replacement if possible.

So how's the Bongo without the shim? If it ain't broke, don't fix it until it is.

I'm sure EBMM could get you a 'factory' shim, but over the years, I've used a lot of different things as shims. Little pieces of sandpaper work very well and tend to not slide around. (Hey, it's sandpaper. But use the real fine stuff.)

I also used a thin guitar pic once.

But really, if you're happy with the setup, then you're happy.

If I was happy with my setup I'd totally agree with you on the don't fix what's not broken philosophy. I'm still not happy with my Bongo's setup and am considering sending it in to EBMM for a full once-over as I don't know of any techs in my area and I love how my 20th was set up.

It's really hard to break a bass, though, you know?

Find a thin guitar pic (which might still be too thick but worth a shot) and insert it in the body side of the neck pocket then tighten things back down. It's going to be a very slight angle change, but might be enough to save you the hassle and down-time of sending the bass off for a set-up.

A piece of fine-grade sandpaper is even better, although it will still compress over time.

But at least this way, you'll know for sure if all you need is a slight shim.

Anyway, that's what I'd do.

after i had owned my brand new 2002 stingray for about 6 months, the weather had taken it's toll and my set up from the factory started to get uncomfortable. I tired a truss rod adjustment and such I just couldn't get the action comfortable. I found some old shimming metal in my dad's work shop and cut a sliver off, dulled the sharp edges, stuck it under the neck when I put the neck back on the bass, set the bass back up and I haven't had a problem since. The shimming metal that I used by the way was paper thin. It doens't take much to make a big difference:)
