Not sure about that text. Every airline has a carry on size checker at the check in line that is 22x14. No guitar, or violin, will fit in there. The text of the law states that u can carry those items on for free only if they meet the restrictions of carry ons by the administrator.

Typically a guitar in a gig bag will fit in the overhead bin or in the coat closet. I've only traveled with mine a couple of times but got it in the overhead once and coat closet the second time. Most carriers have specific baggage rules related to musical instruments in addition to the TSA rules, and I had printouts of both with me but didn't need to use them. It doesn't need to fit in the carry-on size checker to get on the plane.
Back to the OP, that sucks. Hopefully he can get a new neck but United should pay for it.

That really sucks to arrive someplace on the road to find that happen. I'd be pretty pissed too.

I see from the pics his final destination was IAD (Washington Dulles), which I live 20 mins from and have a brand new JP12 he can borrow (for free tix, of course) if needed.

The Silhouette headstock design was designed to decrease the length of the guitar so it would be easier to transport, such as in airplanes. That's what I've heard.

We had that thread several times.
The default Music Man cases are not good enough for flying. We knew that before this guitar fell victim to it.
BTW, does that look like a mahogany neck?

You guys are right with the fact that even though there's a law, it's up to the flight crew. If it's a busy flight and a small flight it's going under the plane in a soft case. This and the fact that we travel as a band 99% of the time not leaving room for several guitars/basses on the plane. This has happened to everyone I know at some point at some level. Even in full anvil cases (The Tubes had a crushed guitar a while back). They even stole Steve Morse's #1 once until Deep Purple raised enough hell to get it "found". It would just be nice if they handled these things with a little care and at least offered an apology instead of ignoring the whole thing as if it's not anything they had a hand in. Maybe a few extra miles??? Anything to show someone screwed up
That said, she's at the doctor today and will be well taken care of thanks to my family at EBMM. Still doesn't make it right on the part of the airline. TL

I once checked an acoustic guitar in the hold, in a gig bag and it arrived safely from Perth, Australia to London Heathrow! They insisted it could not go in the cabin but I was VERY lucky.
When I moved from the UK to the USA, two of my guitars came over as checked baggage and the instruments were safe and sound. One of the cases (a Hiscox Liteflite) was smashed at the bottom corner. Those cases are more or less indestructible! And guess who the airline was.......UNITED!
