I must have missed the official definition somewhere. What exactly makes a "classic Stingray" different from a plain "Stingray"?

Main things would be the string mutes on the bridge and the 2 band EQ instead of a 3 band EQ. They also have a different headstock design, different finish options, etc.

+ it has thicker neck. 7.5" compared to 11" neck radius of "plain" SR. And it has non-contoured body. It is kinda pre-EBMM stingray specs.

I own a standard and classic StingRay - both great basses, but despite their similar appearances, they are quite different feeling basses.

Everything that was said above is true... the only other difference I can think of is the nut.

I also own both.

Apart from the items mentioned they also have:-

Chrome truss rod wheel adjuster
Chrome battery cover held on with two screws
Mid 80s Headstock logo (they don't have a different headstock design - it's the regular Stingray one)

White pick up cover as standard with some finishes (but you can buy black or whte ones as a part, to replace if you wish)

Mine is a go to bass for me - I recently used it on a demo recording and it sounds unbelievably good. Both with and without the mutes engaged.

Attached pics showing various of the differences.

I have also both a Classic and a '98 w/ 2 bands and the Classic sounds and feels very different, better IMO and taste. I was blown away when I tried it and I bought it the following day, after a sleepless night LOL. The only thing I would have liked is the tummy contour but I understand the Classic to be a pre EB reissue, therefore, slab body.
