So you play in a band -some nights you get up & play by yourself so what do you play?

I play in a covers band - happy to do so. We play an eclectic mix of songs.

However some nights I get up and play some numbers by myself For example in a local Jam night with maybe 200 -300 people.

A band opens, plays 45 mins then the mike is open to all and sundry.
Some times people are loathe to get up and the organizer asks me to get up all on my lonesome to play and sing. (Jeez it wasn't long ago I used to ask him and I'd sometimes get lucky and hit the stage) I usually ask for the acoustic guitar unless I have my Albert with me - which I usually play using the Piezo

Fire (to the one I love) - REM
Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol
Willin' / Roll 'em Easy - Little Feat
Here Comes The sun - Beatles
Times Like These - Foo Fighters

even a Swing version of Route 66

I'm looking for some ideas for new songs that can be played and sung by yourself - any of you guys do this? - and what suggestions do you have to entertain a wide age group?

Hell, most any Beatles song come to think of it lol.

There's a solo acoustic guy who plays at an outdoor bar near me. He has giant 500-page binder with just about every type of song in it, some that have zero acoustic in the original tune and he pulls it off wonderfully. I think the key is to pick songs that have great vocals in them, where the singing is the focus and not the guitar-playing.

Just a thought?...

Thanks for the replies so far.

Last night I used a looper (I've used it before) at the Jam night. Set it for auto start, and when I hit the pedal it "clipped the sample" and every 16 bars lost a half beat. It was funny trying to compensate every 16 bars and we had a good laugh about it. But the consensus was "Now we have (Spud's) "Band in a Box" - as I continued to sample and layer over "15 7/8" bars of music !!! lol

I kinda do the same thing at jam nights, only I do it while the jam night drummer (yeah, it's always the drummer isn't it!!) re-arranges the snare, the seat, the cymbals, and finally his hair (if he has any).

And, during this so-called half hour break, I started doing the following song intros out of necessity, at @medium volume: Wheel in the sky, eruption, 316, we willl rock you, dance the night away, top of the world, finish what ya started, jump;

Well, by that time the drummer was supposedly ready we had enough of our time slot left to do one song. Jam nights - you gotta love em!! lol,lol,lol
