I moved into a new house back on December 1st, and I finally have my own music room! Here's a couple of pics -

I have a couple of pieces on the way to round it out - Buttercream SR4 H/S (from Dude), a SUB 1 guitar (from evil bay), and a Line 6 Tone Port UX-2 recording interface. Now all I need is some stuff for on the walls. I have all of the artist photos from the EB/MM Open House, but unfortunately they are not signed. Maybe I'll frame them and put them up anyway.

Anything that I'm missing in there? Any suggestions?

Edit - Damn! Can't figure out how to get the pics to work - someone please help!

Not a Kubicki, it's a Washburn - Status Series. I got it cheap on ebay. It doesn't hold a candle to my pair of Bongos, but it's cool to dink on.

Hey MJ

cool room ...... I'm attempting to do the same in my house, so I have a couple of questions for you:

what type of computer are you using there? I'm finally going to get my own computer, and I am not sure whether I should get a laptop or not. If I get a laptop, I'm told Mac is the way to go. Any advice would be appreciated.

How big is that room? the room I'm dealing with is around 8 x 12.

I definitely think you should hang the pictures from the open house if you want. They'll still look nice, signed or not.

Mj - I know what I wanted to ask; where did you get your desk? How big is it?

Hey Vic, I haven't missed this. I've just been too busy to respond. I'll get all the details that I can tomorrow. I'll get some more (better) pics too.

Thanks for all the replies and interest.

Not a problem! I've been busy too. We haven't actually done anything with the room yet....we've looked at desks, and I've been talking to people about computers.....etc.

Whenever you get a moment is fine. thanks!

Music room......that was part of the deal when we got married. I could have sworn it was somewhere in the vows.

What do you want to do with your computer? That's the first question you should be asking yourself. The second is how much do I want to spend? I think Mac's are really great but I honestly can't justify it after asking the above questions to myself. Here's an old photo of my office.

I'll check that photo problem out, it nabbed me too. I dig the paint, am I wrong thinking it's vaguely orange?

Hey Colin,

This might sound a bit silly, but I have a couple of dilemnas going.

1) I decided on the type of desk I want. Joe (the husband) and I went shopping. What I want (long story) will ultimately cost us $900 and I have a hard time justifying that kind of expense just for a desk. I'm one of those women who likes to find a good bargain.

Joe, on the other hand, is willing to pay it (and this would be a desk just for me!) So, I'm exploring other options, looking at other things. I'd rather get a cheaper desk and spend the money on something else, maybe the computer.

2) Next dilemna - the computer. I was all for a desktop, but many of the DJs at the station are using their laptops to drive their shows. Which is a very cool idea, in my opinion - we've got the hookup right through the broadcast board. And I could have all the guitar CDs I own loaded onto the laptop.

However, I've never really used a laptop. The only reason for me to get one (vs the desktop) would be to use it to do my show instead of hauling a bag of CDs to the station. Several computer guys I know said that desktops still have more bang for the buck, if mobility isn't an issue. This is one I'm still sorting out. An ideal situation would be to have my own desktop AND laptop, but that seems awfully extravagant to me. Yes, I know, I could get an external drive for backups, but still I am not entirely sold on the laptop idea.

The other thing is, Mac vs PC. We are PC people, my husband and I. I would not mind a Mac if it was better for my needs, but he would be the one to service it and I've never really used Macs all that much, to be honest.

So, I'm still thinking about stuff and asking people their opinions, experiences, etc.

As a side note, my husband rocks. He's more willing to spend the $$ than I am - and it's my hobby. (I am a volunteer DJ).

I have a suggestion for the desk, go to a hardware store and purchase an internal door (should be less than $50) and go to an Ikea or equivalent and purchase 4 legs (also under $50).This will make a sturdy desk. The tricky bit is covering the door (actually now a table) I used a 3M tape (like what signwriters use these days. The desk is awesome.

As for a laptop versus PC, I became increasingly tired of laptops either costing me an arm and a leg everytime technology progressed and also being quite fragile. Since I did not want to cart a desktop to gigs, I got a rackmountable computer made for me. Worked out half the price of a decent laptop with at least twice as much power. Now I have 2 gig of ram with 2 hard drives, dual layer DVD burner and a 17" flatscreen. and it only takes up 2 units in my rack. I could run ProTools live if I desired as well as soft synths or even guitar rig. Not to mention it's easy to upgrade in the future.

Victrola - sorry about being tardy with info.

My desk was bout about 4 years ago at either Best Buy or Circuit City - don't remmeber which. It's a great desk, but it's huge. It's about 6 1/2 feet long. I've actually been considering getting a new and more compact desk. Maybe something like this - http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=rec/search/detail/base_pid/546550/

My computer is primarily built for computer gaming. It's made by a company called Falcon Northwest. Here's a link www.falcon-nw.com They are not for the faint of heart or wallet. It works great for recording, but I think you may be able to get something that works equally well from another manufacturer for a lot less money. I've had mine for 2 years, and have had no issues whatsoever with it - the best computer that I've ever owned. I'll buy from Falcon Northwest again regardless of the price - they are that good.

My advice for your computer is to go with a desktop unless you really need the portability of a laptop. If you don't mind spending a little more money, you can get a purpose built recording computer like this - http://www.carillonusa.com/clnweb/index.jsp?country=UK

My room is 15'5" x 9'10", but it's not a perfect rectangle. It looks sort of like this -

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v290/Motojunkie/den.jpg

I calculated it out to be right around 130 square feet.

I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, I'll do my best to help get you answers.

Good luck!

Hey Colin and MJ -
thanks for the info.

Colin - I like your desk idea; I'll be looking into that.

MJ - after much debate, I'd come to the same conclusion re; the computer issue - the ONLY reason for me to get a laptop would be to drive my show.....and so I think I'll go with a desktop for now.

On both the computer and the desk issues, I must confer with the husband.

More details later, but thanks to you guys, I'll keep ya posted.

Hey Colin - my husband likes to 'game' as well - we have an Alienware computer. He's never heard of Falcon NW.

Victrola,
Would you consider an iPod to replace the CDs you haul around? It's easy to load and it might fill the bill for The Guitar Shop's needs. The nano is both PC and MAC compatible and has a good bit of memory. I'm not at all sure that you could dump from the iPod to the station's computer but maybe it's possible that this would work for you! Anyone know? If so, that would allow you more space for your desktop and more $ to get a great computer. I use a PC at work and a MAC at home. Both have +s and -s.
