Hey Knuckleheads,

My personal and my band's New year resolution for 2010 is to get paid gigs. Right now we have 10 nailed songs and 5 songs in progress. We need 15 more to be able to do 3 sets of 10 songs.

We are a bass, guitar, drums and female vocalist. We try to do pop/rock songs that work in a bar. Since we have a female vocalist, she ends up wanting to do some chick rock stuff.

We have performed our 10 song set successfully in bars several times. Not only did we not get garbage thrown at us, we even got some compliments from strangers saying we sounded tight.

Here are the songs we have nailed:

1. This Love: Maroon 5
2. Waiting on the World to Change. John Mayer.
3. Leave Me Alone (I'm Lonely). P!nk
4. Heartbreaker: Pat Benetar
5. Hot: Avril Lavigne.
6. Dead or Alive: Bon Jovi
7. Livin on a Prayer: Bon Jovi
8. Roxanne: Police
9. Sweet Child o Mine: Guns n Roses
10: You Shook Me All Night Long: AC/DC

In Progess (tomorrows rehearsal)
1. Satisfaction (Stones).
2. I Hate Myself for Lovin You (Joan Jett)
3. All Summer Long (Kid Rock...too many folks cover Sweet Home Alabama)
4. Sunday Morning After. Amanda Marshall
5. American Woman. (Guess Who minus the "Say A, Say M" nonsense).

So we need 15 more songs. They need to be fun and easy because we want to get 15 more nailed in 2 months or less. Also, none of us are working musicians...we are all in our 40's and have day jobs. So no Prog Rock masterpieces or technical metal songs. And remember we have a chick lead singer. She's vetoed songs she doesn't think she can sing. Eg New Orleans is Sinking by the Tragically Hip.

Ideas my friends?

If you got a female singer definitely work in some Pretenders - Middle of the Road, Chain Gang, My city was gone (forget the name). Those should go over well.

Tab!!!!!!!

Use those things on the side of your head!

1. The things on the side of my head are busted. (You probably didn't know that, so that's ok)

2. What's wrong with tabs, especially if you only started playing bass a few years ago as a mid-life crisis. It is faster that way. I need to get 15 songs down in less than 4 weeks, so speed is of essence.

3. We should all be reading music as well if you want to get picky.

4. Also, since I don't have perfect pitch another reason to use tabs. I suppose once you have been playing for many years you can easily use your ears.

In summary, I wish I had excellent hearing with perfect pitch perception and the ability to read music and years of bass playing experience. But I don't, unfortunately. Those of you who have the above, I envy you.

So...if someone knows where I can get some tabs for this Motel song, that would be appreciated.

Sorry for the bit of a rant...

My hearing isn't perfect. Years of gigging, and I now have tinnitus.

I hate tabs, I do read music. It's a useful skill to have.

You don't need perfect pitch to work out a song. The more you do it, the better you get. It is a useful skill to develop and will make you a better player.

I'm trying to help you here, but what would I know anyway, only been playing 28 years.

I can see where you're coming from, as learning songs by ear is definitely the most beneficial way of doing it,
but often times players don't have the skills required to do it and I get the impression that people who have been playing for 30 years don't really understand how difficult it is for a beginner to learn a song by ear.

Yes, but unless you give it a go, you will never develop the skill.

I don't dispute what you are saying. I already said in my earlier post that I do envy those who have these skills. But I have not been playing for 28 years...

I know its a bit of a cheat to use tabs, but it has allowed me to learn much faster. At age 46, I want to speed things along.

As part of my practicing routine, I do pull out some of Ed Freidland's books and work on my music reading. Its coming along, but slowly...
