Not if you are playing rock. The blues guys like flats, fretless guys do.

Quite often the flat guys say "The deader the better">

I had flats on my first real bass (1974 Gibby EB3) when that was "The Way". Basically they are deader.

Dead strings are good strings IMO but I'm afraid I might have a hard time getting used with the slick feel of flats.Pretty hard to explain but I think that the rounds kinda hold your fingers in place vs flats will let the fingers slip ex:when playing far apart notes.

And they are very nice strings at that!

But if someone is going to put any type of strings on a bass I'd rather it be an EBMM! Now putting EBMM string on an EBMM bass... thats the stuff!

I thought that since I own $25-30,000 of Music Man basses, I could ask about how I could make my basses sound better. BTW I just bought 12 packs of EBMM Super Slinkys

My two gigging basses consists of flats on one for our R&B motown stuff, and supers on the other for everything else,it takes a little getting use to, but it's the best of both worlds.

I think it has more to do with not making BP feel like you would feel if someone wrote "Yamaha" on one of your Music Mans.

Kind of like that, yeah.

A lot of us have other gear and basses and strings and whatnot, but if you look up top, it says, "Ernie Ball" and I'm just trying to keep it pointed in the right direction without having to actually do any work.

Man gottsa have goals, knowhatimsayin'.

I learned my lesson a few years ago when I tried some Blue Steels on my SR5. The bass seemed to protest and everything went out of whack. I found the bass stiff and hard to play and was really disappointed with the low B string which was dead and lifeless.

Once I returned to a fresh set of Slinky's, my bass gave a big sigh of relief and just sounded so much better.

I had the original strings on the Bongo HH5 that I took delivery on last summer. I noticed that I was having trouble dialing in certain tones recently. Also the bass was deader when just playing w/o an amp. Since the memory of what the bass sounded like new was somewhat faded - I popped on a fresh set of the Slinkies. Goodness! What a difference. I think I will record some with my Zoom H2 while they are still fresh (now about 4 days and one gig old) and keep for comparison differences. The strings, oddly, also felt a bit softer or more buttery. Not sure why or if that was just me.

The biggest difference was not just the crispness when using a pick - but also I got more "Boink" in the upper mid range areas.

One thing though. I had a tad of trouble getting the B string out. Like the hole in the bridge was small. Tuned up and let the bass sit a few times and readjusted the tune. But when playing there was a "Gonk" and the B was loose. Tightened it up and happened again. It seems that the string was caught in the bridge and was working its way through the hole. During the break I got it fixed. Is that normal? I was wondering if a small file for that hole was in order.

I just threw a fresh Super Slinky set on my Sterling. Even when I played a brand "X" bass I only used either Super or sometimes the Regular Slinky sets. I strayed once due to an emergency, and at last count 17 lives were lost. I love the feel and tone of Ernie Ball Strings... BOOM!

I love my Sterling too. BOOM!
