Yup - Bob had some "trials and tribulations" along the way, but over came them with fantastic end results.
I saw spalt maple re-top he did earlier this year and flipped out - that's when I decided to go that route. When at the Tacoma Washington guitar festival in May I hand picked some beautiful spalt (translation:harder to work with spalt, because it was further along in the rotting/decay process) and then looked around for a local luthier. I found a local guy that does great work, but he had never done exactly this, so I hit Bob up (since he had) to see if he'd be interested and was able to talk him into it.
This was an early (2006) Y2D with a flame/stripe top that he planed the body down on - and if you look closely you can see that I went with the Y2D "prototype wiring", that includes the "add bridge" toggle and the blade is only three-way. Another minor touch, he recessed the neck plate.
More pics to come, I'm sure - and thrilled it's done.
Maybe this will convince BP that the next PDN run should be splat maple tops across the product lines? That would sell like hot cakes I tell ya!

Honestly, it felt like a scam at first. Some random guy randomly hits me up out of the blue; felt awkward for sure. I even was hesitant to even accept the job. That first bit out of the way, Kev has been absolutely patient with my screw ups and delays. This guitar has been a thorough challenge, and has subsequently expanded my knowledge 10 fold. Maple with this much spalting is a challenge to say the least. Drill press chewing the top up, 3 way switch exploded out on me (my repair of that was rather crafty though ;D), the top cupped after I trimmed it down... the clear soaked in, the temperature of the clear was too hot and bubbled... man every step of the way was just a battle.
Ironically the one thing I was most scared to do (recessed neck plate) was by far the easiest part!
I'll take lots of good pics tomorrow and pack her up for shipping Tuesday.

Heres the headstock repaired. Had a nasty chip right in the middle. Can't fix the damage to the silk screen unfortunately, but the clear repair came out great!
It was supposed to be a gorgeous, sunny day today, but unfortunately the rain had something to say.
