I got a Stingray 5 and its amazing. unfortunately the fender bassman 250 with a 15" speaker makes the bass almost sound second rate. I stumbled upon an Eden WT400 for cheap so i bought it up. BUt now i am in need of some speakers.... so.... 4x10 with a port for more low end? or 2x10 and a 15"? Ampeg or Gallien-Krueger?

It really depends on what you like to hear.

A larger number of smaller drivers will sound "tighter" in general than a single big driver.

It is not true that big drivers automatically give you more bottom. It has a whole lot to do with the specific drivers and the cabinet design. Take a look at Phil Jones cabinets, for example.

I use a Bose L1 rig. The biggest driver is only 5", but the overall system has huge booty and I can make things walk off tables if I want to. It is most definitely not for everyone, though. It's just...weird. But I'm a weird guy and I love it.

When I was using a conventional bass rig, I favored a 2x12. I had an Avatar B212 cabinet...excellent choice if you're on a budget and I liked it a lot.

IMHO the best way to tell what will work for you is to try out a few cabs.

EBS amps for me, 2X12 and a 15 all the way, fat slap if required, great rockin' sound to. This works for me, but again try a lot of combinations and see how you get on. rock on mate.

A big +1 here. I graduated from 15" speakers in bass cabs a number of years ago, and now I play through one or two 2x10 cabs or my trusty 8x8.

Would using 2 2x10s instead of one 4x10 offer any advantages, other then being able to use just the 2x10, and not having to carry as much around if all you needed was the 2x10?

The flexibility and portability you mentioned is the main reason I went for the two 2x10 cabs rather than a 4x10.

Although, depending on the cab's design a pair of 2x10s could sound quite different to a 4x10. I haven't A-B'ed my SWR 2x10s with a SWR 4x10 to compare the difference, but that type of comparison is potentially something you might like to check out while you're shopping for cabs.

2x12 is my cab size of choice. it's still too big (like a 4x10) but it gives me the right mix between 10" drivers and 15. i love it!

Another fan of 10s... And another fan of Avatar cabs.

I mix and match a 2x10 and a 4x10 based on the gig needs.

Thanks, it is, for me at least, easy to go "Oh, thats 4 10 inch speakers either way so it should sound the same!":p

Do yourself a favor and try the Ampeg SVT410HLF cabinet!!! I use it and it thumps hard! Just to give you a run down on it, it was made especially for hitting the low frequencies of a 5 string and it has an adjustable horn, hence the HLF (horn, low frequency) It has three air holes in the front to allow for more air movement, and inside the cabinet is a light bulb that comes on to absorb some of the power in case you start pushing the speakers to hard. You might think I'm joking, but Google it. The first time mine came on it flickered while i was playing and I thought I caught the thing on fire!. As far as ease of moving the amp, it has a hand rail on the back with 2 wheels so you can roll it like a dolly, and handles on the side for lifting. In my opinion, the best sounding, and best made set of 4 x 10's I've ever played through. Here's a pic of the front of mine so you can see the air holes I'm talking about.

Really you cant listen to anyone else...what matters is your ears you just have to go try some stuff....Also really depends on what your playing.

For rock either 2 2 x 10s or 1 4 x 10 is great...id prefer 2 2 x 10s here....
I do country and blues gigs and some old time rock I like the rounder sound of 12s....

but like I said go to your local store and play some...bring your own head if you can.

(I like Bergantino 1 x 12s here)
