This is what I want......

But Can I get it without the factory pick guard - I have no use for a pick....

The only basses that don't get a pickguard are the special editions such as BFR or anniversary basses.

The best thing you can do is order a clear pickguard from pickguardheaven.com.

I have that exact color stingray on order, with the exception of it having a rosewood fretboard, and the pick up style is HH. I personally actually like the pick guard on it, regardless of whether or not I'm using a pick. For me, the cherry burst seems to create this cool looking Eclipse look around the pick guard. If you get it, and put the clear pick guard on it, post some pics up, I'd like to see how much it changes the overall look of the bass. I'll have mine hopefully by the end of the month, I've been waiting on it since April. I'll definitely have some pics up the day it comes in!

I wonder if it's been considered to allow a customer to order a bass without a pickguard. It wouldn't require much on the plant's end, would it?

You can order pretty much what you want from EBMM as long as it's one of their options and you go through a dealer, but as far as the pickguard thing you're either going to have to take it off yourself and live with the screw holes or fit a clear one.

The distinctive pickguard is what lets you know it's a musicman bass, even spotted from a long distance away. Maybe the company doesn't want to let that go for the normal production basses. I think, as a brand, it's important to stress everything that's unique about your product that sets it apart from the rest.

Granted, Musicman basses have the best grain wood I've seen on a bass period, so it's easy to not want to cover that up. That's why in a week I'll be receiving my clear pickguard for my Pacific Blue Burst bass. And really, it's the best of both worlds with a clear pickguard - you get to show everyone all the way to the back of the room that you have a Musicman, and everyone up close can see what awesome wood grain it has.

My stock Sterling 4H came with a white PG, I liked it since the only other white coloring was the compensated nut, which added a little contrast with the black pick up and black inlays. If I was to order the same color Trans/Gold I would have probaly went with a pearloid white. That said, as per one of the other replies, the wood grain is truly magnificent and I did go and get a clear PG and I love the result. It kind of offers as I said before a vintage yet simple elegance to the instrument.
