Can anybody recommend a free bit of sofware that will change the key of the song on playback (MP3's) whilst retaining the speed (tempo) of the song?

Need to rehearse songs that will be played in a different key to the original.

The Amazing Slow Downer should do the trick Spud
 
I use RiffMaster Pro - it isn't free however. You can though not only slow down without altering pitch, but you can also change pitch without effecting speed (say a song is in Eb and you want to learn it in E), select sections of a song to go over and over, export sections, pan left-right, even remove vocals. Its worth every penny of $50
 
Audacity is pretty good for a free piece of software, your are able to change the tempo without altering the pitch and you can change the key of a song without altering the tempo :)
 
Its not free, but I'd go with Riffstation
You can change the pitch and speed independent, and you can also mute or solo guitartracks
Another feature is that it reads the chords from an mp3. Works pretty good with easy chords
There's a 30 Day Trial Version the Fullversion is 20$ or so
 
I've done it in Audacity, though I've gotten rid of that and I'm using the most excellent Reaper for general recording purposes, which I'm pretty sure has excellent native plugins for that kind of thing.

For iPhone or iPad, try the Yamaha THR Session app. Does speed and pitch and tries to do a guitar or bass removal too.

As always, it's impossible to do this kind of manipulation and maintain sound quality, and the further you get away from original key or temp, the worse it gets.
 
Thanks to everyone for these recommendations! (and it's not even my thread).

I'll have to go check them out, and it's great they work on a Mac.

One I'll mention that I've used on my iPhone and iPad is iLift (not free but cheap). It's great for just sitting there with the guitar and not having to hook up to the computer.

I thought that I would further state that:-

I don't have an I phone.

My OS is Win 7

It just needs to be really straightforward preferably open source and free. I won't be recording
with the software - just dropping an MP3 into it and asking it to change the key - keeping the same tempo.

Yup I used Audacity. It's a bit choosy what file format it opens (licensing law) but it did fine. Some of the other software, although advertised free was really just a trial. So Audacity it is then.
 
well Kev .... I should own up here!:o

It was on my computer all along!
wasn't on the taskbar or the start menu - just buried in my program files, so I, (or my son) must have installed it some time ago. Audacity said that it could not (didn't have a licence) to play certain file types. It accepted .mp3 and .wav so I was ok - eventually. Anyway did the gig last night and it was all ok.

Got a gig in a nice venue in the centre of Cardiff next Friday. Just been doing a little tinkering, and I'm going to run a signal path I've never run before :eek:

I'll be using the LEAL , mono out into my 6165 splitter. Signal will then be split:-
a. Dry signal/amp - my MM RP 65 - I just love that amp!!
b. wet signal i.e. into a compressor for a really tiny amount of comp, then into my RD50 set with a modicum of gain. I liked it when I had it cranked up in the man cave. Obviously a bit worried because live is nothing like the home set up, but will have a contingency plan of a boost pedal that I'll use into the RP65 if it (the AB set up) is crappy on the night.

So all in all it'll be:-

MM guitar into MM splitter pedal into 2 x MM amps. :cool:

Audacity is great if you want to save the song as a new mp3 with a different pitch or tempo than the original. But I use BestPractice for real-time adjustments, and it has a good A-B section repeat for practicing too. And yes it's free.
