Hi - i have a sport s/s/h bought from pawn shop - noticed the battery getting so hot you cant touch it and a smokey electonics smell - looking at wiring it seems stock ? but i dont know - could anyone out there look at this pic and tell me if they think its been wired wrong to cause this - or what could cause this?

hi Pete - yes, if you mean the negative/positive orientation of battery.
A engineer friend of mine said it might be caused by a bad capacitor or short?

Hard to tell exactly from the pic, but the wiring looks ok.

As mentioned, shorting the battery would result in it getting hot. That could be from the wiring itself, it could also be that there's something wrong with the Silent Circuit (never actually seen that happen though).

Should be an easy thing for somebody with a bit of experience to track down. Definitely take the battery out until you get it sorted out.

Yes, as Beej said, you can quite happily leave out the battery and the guitar will still work fine. One or two pickup combinations might be a little noisier but that's all. In fact on the silo special, which is also HSS) it's just the neck pickup on it's own the uses the silent circuit.

from the picture where everything looks fine I would try to check the output jack first then the battery case
