Dave. I love this type of stuff. Thanks for introducing it. It's an interesting excerise.

I've just taken a closer look at my '89 Ray (today), because of this thread, and it doesn't have the original string retainer. I've been looking at the freaking thing for the last 2 years. I can't believe I missed it!

So , now I'm looking for an original string tree...darn! :D

Yep I really enjoyed the photo thing kept me up till 5am!! the other night really keeps the old brainbox going doesn't it? Im sure everybody would join in if they got the vib? sorry about your grim part discovery but hey...every cause creates an effect ;)

The string retainer is almost identical to a genuine one but the inside diameter (where the screw is placed) appears a little larger. So it's easy to miss. It may also be the head of the screw itself. I didn't have time today, but I'll take it off and have a closer look.
