Oh well, here we are again “live atLeeds” waiting an hour for a train again to get me home tyoCardiff.
Whilst working during the week I wastalking to delegates at a session I was running and one of thedelegates said that her partner played guitar, and she posed thequestion “why does he need so many electric guitars?” … thisprompted a mini debate as other delegates also played guitar. - wellit's better than discussing UK taxation isn't it lol.

So a brief summary of the discussionwas as follows:-

  1. Well guitars can have different picups and different combinations of pickups. HHH, SSS, HSS, HSH, HSSH etc etc. Single coils sound different, even a Humbuker spit will not be exactly the same as a true single coil, due to the “redundant magnets” still affecting the electrical signal created by a metal string moving in a magnetic field.
  2. Guitars can be made from different tone woods the body, the neck. All contributing to the resultant sound the guitar produces.
  3. Hartails, classic trem, floyd trems each bring different things to the table.
  4. Jamie humphries for example has a guitar tuned to E flat, so when he has to play in that key it makes it easier than playing in e flat on a regular tuned guitar.
  5. Some players like to tune down a step, step +1/2 2 steps and need thicker strings to do it. Some people play 4 stringed "guitar" 3 strings! 5/6/7/8/12/18!! Then there are fretted guitars, fretless ...
  6. Some players like to play in a lot of different tunings – sonny landreth for example. Interestingly I have a recording of Sonny on a radio prog explaining his auto tuning Les Paul. It has a key pad on the front of the guitar (a Les Paul)- he selects a tuning and it accurately achieves that tuning in seconds – the radio clip is a real eye opener!! He says his guitar roadie loves it as he doesn't have to constantly bring another guitar on stage all the time.
  7. Then I went on to talk about the EB GC guitar. The male delegate's eyes lit up when I told him about it and he couldn't wait to see the you tube clips on it.
At which time I had to start thecourse!!

ok I seem to have some more time tospend …
so pickups! … I love the stockpickups in my guitars and I know people on here like to experiment bychanging their pickups. Well a mate of mine in Cardiff makes pickupsand he patiently spends time trying to explain the science behind themanufacturing process. He is very innovative and he also manufactureshis own pickup covers. Going back to what I said earlier about asplit bucker not exactly sounding like a true single coil – youwould literally have to take the magnets out to achieve that. Well Ican't give too much away but he has devised a unique magnetic systemthat can actually do that – without actually removing the magnets!!- his development is unique and I've neither heard nor seen anythingquite like it – exciting times.

Oh well train will be in soon.

Chip in with any comments!!

Women not understanding men having multiple guitars should take a good look at their closets, in particular the 'bag' and ' shoe' departments :D

You sure ride a lot of trains!!! Do you ever practice on them?? Or is that a stupid questions??

Well not practice as such but to pass the time (4 + hours each way) on the train (unless I have last minute work to do!) I have some guitar tutorials, concerts that I watch on a net book - wouldn't be without that!!

When I worked away last year in Liverpool over 3 months, I took a guitar with me and left it in the hotel over the weekend - I could then practice and play at a local open mike night. Haven't got one with me this time and I miss it when I'm away!!!
