I played a Stingray 5 HH the other day and it sounded pretty much like the Stingray 4 HH. As I understand it, the single pickup SR 5 is based on the Sterling preamp and pickup. Is that now changed with the new SR 5 HH? Is the SR 4 and the SR 5 now the same as far as the pickups/preamp/electronics?

The official word from the MM folks is that the preamps are the same as they used to be (Stingray preamp in the HH Stingray, etc). They also said that the pickups were the same but that's not *quite* true. I checked my HH Sterling and they have the same coils, polepieces, and ceramic magnet as the normal Sterling but they use Bongo pickup covers and there's no hum-canceling coil since the HH Sterling can't do series or single-coil. I assume the same will be the case in the SR5 since they usually share the same type of ceramic magnet triple-coil pickup.
