Hi Jon,
well, I posted on friday about the '70s Ray that was in the shop for a few hours and although I didn't d any measurements the neck felt alot different from the '02 Ray that was in. Do you know how variable, if at all, the pre-EB StingRay neck shape was and has it changed over the course of it's existence at EBMM??
thanks. and maybe MusicMan Nut can pipe up too regarding this matter :D

As far as I know, there have been no changes to the shape of the SR necks

im sure Jon's right ... but Gav would be a good person to ask as well.

on a related note: i was under the impression that the necks on my 2 Sterlings felt different to me for a few days. i knew i had to be on crack, but they totally didnt feel similar. turns out the difference i felt was due to the action. id never experienced thinking a neck was "different" b/c of action, but ya, that's all it was

The Pre-EBs have a 7.5 inch (?) radius giving the fretboard side a distinct roundness/curved feel to it. The back of the neck has a "D" (?) shape with plenty of wood to sit in the hand between the first finger and thumb. In effect, the front and back of the neck feels very early Fenderish and very similar to my 62 Reissue J Bass (without the narrowness at the nut).

My 1989 Ray has a similar neck but the radius has changed to around 10.5 to 11 inches giving a very flat feel to the fret board.

My 1994 has a similar radius as the 89 (flat fretboard) but the neck profile is very narrow and not as deep. Alot of wood has been removed from the back of the neck in comparison to the earlier necks.

The Basses I tried at SLO felt different again. Still with a large radius but I think more wood has been added to the back of the neck.

My description is not very technical but thats the only way I know how to describe them.

Thanks Gav., ya, the radius of the '77-ish didn't entirely throw me off but the thinness of it did which felt great.the action on the '02 was higher also adding to the perceived difference in feel but I do reckon there is a bit less meat to the '70s neck I felt.

oh ya... and thanks Jon :p I just about was a dickhead and forgot to mention your reply... :D

I got a few pre-eb's and they have different neck shapes. They vary from fat "D" shaped to flat "C" shape. I believe the current EB ones are made with much more consistency due to the fact they're using CNC's in the process.
I don't think that was the case with the old CLF factory where Leo was making the 76-79 basses... and like old fenders, each bass has its own personality.
I also love the 7.25" radius a lot, but I'm an old schooler...
