So, last night Mike (TNT) and I gigged in the East Bay, opening for some metal cover band.

Being that I don't (yet) have a camper shell, and the weather being dodgy at best over the last couple of weeks, I arranged to use the other bass player's rig.

Mike and I get to the bar to find a small arena setting...HUGE Ludwig DB kit, Marshall amps on both sides of the stage, flanked by Peavey 2x15 P.A. cabs...and a Sunn 2x15 side-ported (1' crawl space, more like) bass cab powered by a Coliseum head!

I nearly soiled meself (sorry for the Pythonism, Jack)!

I left the bass player's settings alone, with exception to the low bass and normal/brite switching. I flipped over to 'normal', and boosted the lows to 5...now add that to a stage that resonates bass better than any sonic maximizer could, and well...

...let's just say the women couldn't stop shaking on the floor! :D

Yup.

I wouldn't trade my Sunn 1200s for all the GKs in the world. I wouldn't mind having some Sunn cabs, either, but the Ampegs are working just fine.

Those Coliseum heads are truly old school, aren't they?

They are great, and reliable from what I've heard. I may hunt down a Sunn 2x15 rig for bigger gigs, and keep my Ampeg B2R/SVT-15EN for home practice and smaller gigs.

Too bad you're not over here...I've got a 115BLX-II and 210BLX-II that I'm selling off...one month old and unused.

Dang. I'd sure pick it up.

I think my 1001RB-II and Neo 2 12 are doing me just fine though.

My mom already hates that I shake the house with this 2 12. Just wait until I order the 1 15. :D

In case anyone is interested GK is coming out with a Valve Preamp possibly to debut at NAMM. I would imagine it will do a little bit of drive/grit.Should be interesting........
Was told by Gene (and he let it out over at the GK forum) that a hybrid amp (not just a preamp) is also in the works (as well as a Neo 4x10 cab)

My first amps were GK's...Played them for years...a great sounding amp...I had one of the originals with the big flat white switch in front. The front of the head, from memory was high gloss plastic...amp was a killer...was noisy, but had great power for being so light.

James.....I have to say you and TNT really know how to get the place rockin. From the opening song, to the end of your night, no breaks, and pedal to the metal. Foreigner, Journey, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Montrose, Van Halen....one song after another.....it was awesome. If you forumites ever want to see an excellent show and are in the area, you should definitly try to hit one of these gigs. :)

That black ice pickguard looks awesome on the white ray! Very cool!

Andrew

Thanks Andrew! I just thought that Black Ice would set off the White finish just right.

I had the privilege of playing through one of those beasts once, and it was great!

Definitely a great amp from what was a great company! Why hasn't F*nder re-issued these things? I sure don't see a lot of those 800 watt Bassmen around here!

Anyhoo, sounds like a great time...too bad you are all the way out on the left coast, or I'd have to come out and get bludgeoned!

Hey Nick! I was just wondering this morning where you've been...glad to see you're still on the radar!

Yeah, that Sunn system, for being old and decrepit (like me) had serious tone and drive to it; plenty of bottom!

If I had the scratch for two systems, I'd keep one Ampeg and one Sunn; both with 2 15's.

Yeah, no Stealth tech for me! I'm still pingin' like a C-130 with the gear down and the flaps extended!

If I had the scratch, I might toss them both for one of those Phil Jones monster tube heads (but I think you would need a crane truck to move it!)

Cheers!
