Best thing you can do for your tone is turn off the horn. Horns have no place on a bass cabinet. All they do is introduce hiss.
and not to mention the 10-20kHz zone which only introduces the upper harmonics and overtones which actually reinforce the fundamental of the note being played  :D

new ampeg svt classic.
im stoked on how it sounds.

...One of the best basses w/ one of the best (tube!) heads...who'da thought??...
:D

Just kidding- I use a V4BH, less power, same great tone- Enjoy it; you can't help but finding a great bass sound with MM and Ampeg tube tone-----

One word for the SVT Classic. CRAP. Just kidding. AMAZING. 300 pounding tube watts makes my heart sing.

After a while you look for something smaller and lighter. But there is nothing like standing in front of an Ampeg fridge with eight tens.

I have a rig-Ampeg V4BH head, same pre-amp as the SVT; quartet of 6L6GC's for
100 (tube) watts- 40 lbs.
I match it with a SVT-48HE cab, no longer made,a 4x8 w/ horn, compact & light.

I must say- With my former Sterling and its incredible eq, I have NEVER played thru
a better sounding rig- It's no monster like mentioned above, but it has plenty of volume, headroom, and tone to spare. The V4B has an "enhance" switch, that when used with the horn.....can't describe how GOOD it gets.

All in all, EB/MM and Ampeg seem particularly well matched to my ears.

Pity then, that in a live rock environment, the only audience members who will be able to discern those frequencies are dogs :p

I love my Ampeg cabs - Classic series 4-10 and 1-15 - but I'd put my Sunn 1200S up against any Ampeg head. Loud. Powerful. Punchy. CLEAN.

1200 thumpin' watts.

But I like SVTs, too. I wish they were lighter!

 The last time I boosted anything around 12kHz I sure heard a difference... but then again I do have a hankerin' for some Alpo from time to time

Although the human ear can discern frequencies between 20Hz and 20kHz, for live music, 27Hz-5kHz is the practical range. Coincidentally, the highest note on a full size piano keyboard is just below 5kHz.

Sure, you might be able to hear the difference in your living room, or when you're in the rehearsal room without the rest of the band playing, but tweaking your EQ in the 12kHz range will achieve little in a live situation. Not trying to pick a fight, just stating facts.

I too had my first practice this past week with my newly acquired SVT-4PRO & SVT610CL along with my Sterling. Very sweet! Best rig I've owned thus far. :D
